Mrs. Joyce (Dahlgren) Remsburg
September 7, 2025
Mrs. Joyce (Dahlgren) Remsburg, 91, of Charleston, S.C., passed away on September 7, 2025. She was the wife of the late Maj. Clark Remsburg, Sr.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2025, at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston, S.C., with Rev. Dr. Holton Seigling officiating. A reception will follow after the service in the Molly Wier Fellowship Hall at the church.
Joyce was born in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of Mr. Paul and Mrs. Violet Dahlgren. A brilliant mind and bright spirit from a young age, Joyce attended and graduated from Ashley Hall on a piano scholarship. She later graduated from College of Charleston and became a Fulbright Scholar. Her lifetime love of music abounded in her musical service to others as a church organist in Charleston and at several military chapels; private piano teacher; and including more than 20 years as the music teacher for the kindergarten at First Scots Presbyterian Church.
Throughout her adult life, Joyce was a stalwart and dedicated member of the community who was a servant leader, going out of her way to learn the names and hearts of all she encountered from the "greatest" to the "least of these." An advocate and protector for the people she loved, she always had a seat at her table, a listening ear, and boundless wisdom to give. Joyce remained focused on the blessings God gave to her and her family and was a steward with a compassionate heart and spine of steel. Passionate about education, Joyce served for many years as a room mother, PTA president, served as vice-chair of the Charleston County School Board, and taught real estate licensing at Trident Technical College where she helped craft the curriculum.
A longtime member of First Scots Presbyterian Church, Joyce's heart for service flourished in her faith community. Come any Sunday morning or Wednesday evening, you could count on Joyce, and her husband, Clark, to be in church. Joyce was a woman who understood and embraced what it meant to be joyful. A gracious woman who practiced the art of hospitality, she ensured that everyone had a place to be and felt welcomed. She knew and demonstrated her faith in such a way that despite hardships and grief, there was light in her eyes and joy in her heart.
Joyce is survived by her son, Clark (Marilyn); grandchildren, Shiloh Hernandez (Michael), Rachel Remsburg, Luke Remsburg, Hannah Remsburg and Julian King; great-granddaughter, Nisreen; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Joyce is preceded in death by her daughters, Anne Remsburg and Melissa King (Howard).
In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be given to First Scots Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC, 29401.
