DAVID WEGENER
GODFREY — David L. Wegener, 86, of Godfrey, passed away on Monday, June 19, 2017, at 9:15 p.m. at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
He was born January 22, 1931, in Alton, and was the son of the late Henry F. and Mary T. (nee Walters) Wegener.
A 1949 graduate of Marquette Catholic High School in Alton, he was drafted as a catcher by the New York Giants to play AAA baseball. He later volunteered to serve his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War, and was a member of V.F.W. Post #1308 in Alton.
He was co-owner of the family business Wegener Grocery in Alton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Shirley A. Wegener.
In addition to his wife, he is also survived by: five children: Jeannie, Robert, Nancy, Barbara, and Meg Wegener; four step-children and their spouses: Jerry (Sheri) Ramey of Godfrey, Illinois, Larry (Diane) Ramey of Big Horn, Wyoming, Patty (Jason) Priebe of Boulder, Colorado, Chrisann (Bill) Jones of Chesterfield, Missouri; sister, Mary Malone of Godfrey,
sister-in-law, Fran Wegener of Godfrey; eight grandchildren: Emily Light, Matt Schillenger, Sam Light, Ryan Jones, Kelsey Jones, Conner Jones, Remy Jones, Kylon Priebe; four great-grandchildren: Melina Schillenger, Mariah Schillenger, Madelyn Schillenger and Max Light, as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother George Wegener and by a sister Charlotte Schneider.
Visitation will be Friday, June 23, 2017, 9 a.m. until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Father Steve Pohlman as Celebrant.
Interment will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey. Military honors will be provided by the Ritual Team of VFW Post #1308.
Memorials may be made to a memorial fund of one's choice.
Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
