James Towey Obituary

James M. Towey
Englewood - James Mayo "Jim" Towey, 81, passed away peacefully at his home in Englewood, FL, on September 5, 2025.
Jim was born on April 26, 1944 in Wood River, IL, to Virginia and James F. Towey. A graduate of Summit High School in New Jersey and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, he built a successful career as owner and operator of an independent insurance brokerage firm. He spent most of his life as a resident of Godfrey, Illinois, more recently splitting his time between Kentucky Lake and Englewood.
He served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army's Company B, 2nd/60th, 9th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. In recognition of his sacrifice, courage, and honor, he was awarded multiple medals, including a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His relationships with his brothers-in-arms remained precious to him throughout his life.
Jim was a devoted husband to his wife of more than 50 years, Rose Mary Towey (née Cronin); loving father to Brian Towey (Tess Wilson) and Emily (Michael) McMahon; doting grandfather to Aiden, Avery, and Clare; proud uncle of Scott (Carol) Whitaker and his many wonderful nieces and nephews in the Cronin family; and dear friend to many.
He dedicated years of service to The Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club and Boys & Girls Club of Alton, holding leadership roles in both organizations. His favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting, and cheering on the Fighting Illini. Famous for his warm, welcoming hosting-and his brisket-Jim was never happier than when surrounded by family and friends. He will be remembered for his quick wit, steadfast loyalty, generosity, and the lasting impact he left on those who knew and loved him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Susan Whitaker.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, October 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at The Old Bakery Beer Company in Alton (400 Landmarks Blvd). In loving memory of Jim, memorials may be given to the Richardson Wildlife Foundation (https://www.gofundme.com/f/JimTowey) or the Alzheimer's Association.
