Joel Bishop Obituary
Wood River - Joel Bishop, 42, passed away at 12pm on Friday, February 9, 2024. He was born on December 12, 1981, in Kirkwood, Missouri, the son of Randy and Cheryl (Gilmour) Bishop of Wood River. In addition to his parents, Joel is survived by his son: Jordan Bishop of Staunton, a daughter: Christina Bishop of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, a sister: Katie Bishop of Hartford, a nephew: Kai Walker of Hartford, his grandma: Nora Gilmour of Roxana, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Joel was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Seabee from 2001 to 2009. He then served in the Navy Reserves. He loved fishing and camping.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Robert Gilmour, Lloyd and Norma Bishop.
In celebration of his life, memorial visitation will be from 5pm to 8pm on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warriors Project and will be accepted at the funeral home.

I was Joel's commanding officer in NMCB 133. He was a great Seabee and an even better friend to his Shipmates. Those of us who had the honor to serve beside him mourn with you. Janet and I will keep Joel and your family in our prayers. May God bless him and give him eternal peace.

Did not know Joel. Grew up in Alto Pass/Cobden, IL and served in Seabees. Used to get mail at Lock and Dam 26 in Alton, IL near Wood River. Looks like Joel was a Builder in the Seabees. I served as a Utilitiesman.

Joel and I spent the last 6 months closely intertwined. I´ve never experienced such a kind, caring, and goofy individual like him. Never will I know another love like his either. I hope they have room in heaven for another sea lion, (a nickname I called him). I´ll miss him more than anyone will ever know.

To the family and friends of Joel, you have my deepest condolences. I pray for God to give strength, grace, and faith as you navigate this incredible loss. Joel and I served together, and while we weren't close friends, I do remember him, and I'm saddened with, and for y'all.
