Margaret Powell Obituary
Alton - Dr. Margaret B. Powell passed from this world peacefully on Monday, June 13, 2022. She was at her home in Alton, IL with a beloved friend at her side. Born April 24, 1943 in Whiteland, IN, as a child in a military family, she spent her childhood in Texas, Indiana, California, Alaska, and Okinawa where she graduated from high school.
After a career of over 35 years as a professor of Teacher Education, Reading, and Children's Literature at Principia College and St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley, Dr. Powell spent her retirement years in Alton, IL.
Margaret created a sense of community wherever she lived. She was an active member in her church and in several local community groups supporting social and racial justice. She found great pleasure in cheering on her granddaughter, Maya, in her various school events and sports.
A celebration of Margaret's life is planned for 8 October 2022. Dr. Powell came to Principia when I was there as a Secondary Education major. Her joy and enthusiasm for teaching and learning were infectious, inspiring and a catalyst for many of us who went on to a lifelong career in the education field. After 11 years of teaching I became a Superintendent for the next 25 and retire in two months. I am deeply sorry for any sense of loss you may feel. Please know she made a huge impact on many lives. Thank you to the family of Margy for sharing her with us.

Margaret was a patient, loving, kind teacher of an education class at Principia College, where she questioned, invigorated and inspired. I remember her as a fun and wonderful lady who was willing to "walk the extra mile". I am so glad to have known her. xx
