Melinda Dirksmeyer Obituary

Melinda Dirksmeyer
Brighton - Melinda Lowe Dirksmeyer passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on March 20, 2025 at the age of 84. Born on January 15, 1941 in Austin, TX, she was the daughter of Virginia Moore Lowe and Joseph William Lowe. Melinda was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene Dirksmeyer; and by her sister, Josephine (Joseph) Lowe Barry; and two brothers, Michael Lowe and Stephen Lowe. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (James) Dirksmeyer Frey, Theresa Dirksmeyer, and Susan Dirksmeyer, all of East Alton. She is also survived by her sister, Deborah (Edward) Lowe Palkot, of Houston, TX; as well as four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Melinda considered Paula Narup, a childhood friend of her daughters, as one of her own.
Never one to shrink from a challenge, Melinda worked hard at a variety of jobs from the Glassworks to McDonald's to Schnuck's.
Nor did Melinda ever shrink from speaking her mind, keeping us all on our toes. She was a strong, independent woman who was not easily persuaded to change her opinion or follow advice she did not solicit. Melinda loved to bake and was famous for her chocolate chip cookies and apple pies. She also loved to crochet and cross-stitch. While some of these hobbies fell by the wayside, the one constant in her life was her love of books. Melinda was a voracious reader who put the rest of us to shame.
