Alton - Michael James Marko, 85, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at Alton Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born on October 31, 1940 in Carlyle, IL to James and Bianca (Fornelli) Marko.
Michael married Pamela J. Moehle on January 23, 1980 in Las Vegas, and she survives.
Mike worked as a pipeline welder for Cherokee Pipeline until 1965 when he and his father started Mike's Inc., a welding, diesel engine repair, and commercial marine repair business of which he was still the working owner of up to the time of his passing. Mike was well known in the marine industry for his perseverance, problem solving skills, can-do attitude, and strong work ethic. He served as a cook in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War but was able to stay stateside allowing him to continue running and growing his fledgling company. Though not having much spare time, he acquired both aviation pilot's and scuba diving licenses, was an avid reader, and, as his life revolved around water, always enjoyed pleasure boating of any kind. Earlier in life, he was a member of multiple local water ski clubs, even learning to jump and barefoot ski. He also appreciated any time he was able to spend vacationing with his family - whether at his Lake of the Ozarks residence or traveling to any location with sand and, of course, water. Mike was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church and was actively involved with the maintenance and upkeep of the church and grounds.
In addition to his wife, Pam, Mike is survived by five children and their spouses, Sue Tucker (Arlie), Amy Jo Marko, Mike Marko Jr. (Amanda), Tiffany Marko Yiatras (Harry), and Casey Marko; six grandchildren, Zac Tucker (Kristen), Bianca Renken, Rebecca Renken, Michael Scott Marko, Mia Marko, and Olivia Yiatras; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Tucker; and many other relatives and friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Rose.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 2 p.m. until a Prayer Service at 4 p.m. at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, Illinois with Fr. Jeff Holtman OSF.
A private burial service will take place at Valhalla Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Living Lands and Waters.
