S. Jean Paynic
Rosewood Heights - S. Jean Paynic, 96, passed away Wednesday, November 5, 2025 at Cedarhurst of Bethalto.
Born Dec. 12, 1928 in Glasford, Ill., she was the daughter of Otto and Gladys (Tindall) Lightbody.
She was a teacher at Roxana, Wood River, and Granite City schools and also taught adult education classes in between, for a total of 10 years. Jean enjoyed playing golf, reading, sewing and quilting. She also enjoyed traveling.
Jean married Stephen A. Paynic Feb. 9, 1952 at the former St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Wood River. He preceded her in death Jan. 16, 2013.
Surviving are four sons, Stephen (Sherry) Paynic of Rochester, Minn., Brian (Brenda) Paynic of Wood River, Gregory (Laura) Paynic of Downers Grove, Ill., and Christopher Paynic of Tampa, Fla.; two daughters, Catherine (Michael) Weaver of Freeport, Ill., and Diane (John) Herndon of Roxana; 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Karen Lightbody of Peoria, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dean Lightbody.
Visitation will be 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14 at Paynic Home for Funerals. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15 at Holy Angels Catholic Church by Father Donald Wolford.
A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Lancaster Cemetery in Glasford, Ill.
