THOMAS HERTZ
LAWRENCE, KANSAS — Thomas was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on Sept. 25, 1945, and went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 26, 2017. He spent the majority of his childhood in East Alton, Illinois. He was the son of Allie Arline Allen Hertz and Joseph Charles Hertz. Tom had four brothers, Joseph C. Hertz, Jr. of Tallahassee, Robert John Hertz (Karen) of Maryville, Illinois, Gregory Vincent Hertz (deceased), Michael Gerard Hertz (deceased), and two sisters, Mary Ann Hertz Swerdzewski (Dr Frank) of Tallahassee, and Celeste Marie Hertz of Alton, Illinois.
Tom was the devoted, loving husband to Laura Crawford Hertz, marrying her in Tallahassee, Florida, on Nov. 27, 1987. He had two sons that he loved and cared for, Andreas Michael Hertz of Jersey City, New Jersey, and Daniel Roy Hertz of Tallahassee, Florida.
In addition to his two children, Tom had 12 nieces and nephews, former wife Helga Hoppe and former sister-in-law Carol Hodson. He also enjoyed the company of his four sisters-in-law, April Crawford, Julie Crawford, Joan Meadows, and Crystal Harrison, and especially his brother-in-law, Bob Meadows, who was a dear friend.
He was loved and admired by so many. Tom served in the Army for three years and he was a proud veteran. He worked as a computer technician/analyst for the Florida Legislature for 22 years.
Tom had many interests. He enjoyed working and building cars and airplanes, and was known as a respected mechanic. He built a beautiful home in the mountains that he was very proud of. He loved mowing the lawn and building a fire in the fire pit. One of his favorite things to do was to sit in his rocker on the front porch and look out at the mountains. He also enjoyed fishing, riding his Harley, and hanging out with his friends. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Tom's name to Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 5665 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, FL 32309 or Veterans of America, 8719 Colesville Road, Suite 100, Silver Springs, Maryland 20910.

Condolences to the Hertz family. I worked with Tom at the Democrat back in the 80's. I will always remember his laugh when telling us stories of his mishaps with his home-built airplane. The years past by and went our different ways then I met him at Home Depot and he told me he wrecked it. We just laughed and laughed. And to my surprise he still had his red jeep. I will always remember him.
