Carl Nykaza Obituary

Carl P. Nykaza of North Scranton died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, at the Geisinger Community Medical Center after a brief battle with COVID-19.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Louis and Clementine Nykaza. He had fond memories of Cathedral High School. Carl was extremely proud and loved his service with the United States Navy, he then went on and attained degrees from Salve Regina University, University of Scranton and Sacred Heart University where he earned his MBA. Carl never tired of learning.

Before retirement, he worked in sales and student financial aid. He lived many wonderful years in Newport, R.I., and towns in Connecticut before settling back in his hometown of Scranton.

Carl raised a beautiful family with Tara (Gavin) Nykaza. His beloved Brigid Nykaza, Devon (Nykaza) Stuart, Colin Nykaza and Brenna Jane; son-in-law, August Stuart; and grandchildren, Arthur Stuart, Eleanor Stuart and MaryJane Grace Steczkowski. He is also survived by his brother, Louis Nykaza and sister-in-law, Jessica Nykaza, and nephew, Travis Nykaza. Carl's greatest delight was to see the happy smiling faces of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed long walks around Lake Scranton and fishing.

Dad, we love you more than lobster and filet mignon. Thank you for being the definition of unconditional love.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary, 316 William St., Scranton. Friends and family may pay their respects Saturday in the church from 9 until Mass time. Social distancing guidelines will be enforced and face masks will be required. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

Lou & Carl's family,
I was so sorry to read of Carl's passing in the paper this morning. I was hoping to get in touch with him to let him know that just last week another guy from the old neighborhood Tom McHugh had passed away. I will always remember playing football & baseball on North Irving Ave & Schautz Stadium with Carl & haning out in Cathedral High School. Also seeing him every day at Lake Lincoln pool either in a lounge chair or riding around the park in his '58 Chevy.
