Dennis R. Owen Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He is survived by his beloved wife, the former Marion Rosato Owen. Together, they celebrated 43 years of marriage.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Emrys and Mildred Giles Owen and was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1963. Prior to his retirement, he worked for National Book. Strong rooted in his faith, Dennis was a member of Scranton Revival Baptist Church. His family, especially his grandchildren, were the focal point of his life. He loved attending their sporting and school events and proudly wearing their school colors. Early in life, Dennis was the president of the Scranton Jaycees. An avid swimmer, he coached, mentored and refereed many swimming events in Lackawanna County. In his spare time, Dennis loved to sit on the front porch, garden and enjoy the beauty of nature. His kind and gentle demeanor, along with his "dad" jokes, were loved by all who had the pleasure of meeting him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Lori (Joel) Owen Smetanka, Derwood, Md.; Dennis (Debbie) Jr., Avoca; Teri (Jeffrey) Watkins Huester, Roaring Brook Twp.; and Krista (Nicholas) Owen Thomas, Pocono Summit; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Ethan and Isabella Owen, Peter and Andrew Smetanka, Ryan and David Huester; three stepgrandchildren, Ryan Vermack, Damien and Breanna Thomas; a sister-in-law, Linda Owen, Factoryville; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by siblings, Nancy Jordan, Lillian Dixon, Laddie Owen and John Donald Owen.
Family and friends are invited to attend Dennis' funeral, which will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Scranton Revival Baptist Church, 2020 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Pastor Randy Bloem officiating. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park. Friends may call Wednesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church.
