Elizabeth Klansek Obituary

Elizabeth Marie Klansek of Fountain Hills, Ariz., formerly of Scranton, passed away on Feb. 4, 2017, at Honor Health Hospital, Shea, Scottsdale, Ariz. Betty was married to Al Klansek for 43 years.

She was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Skimmage) Sabo. After graduating from Scranton Central High School, she entered the State Hospital School of Nursing, achieving her RN license. Betty then accepted a position in the pediatrics department of the Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. After several years, she returned to Scranton and accepted a position in the operating room at Community Medical Center as a surgical nurse. Through the years, she was promoted within the department to eventually become the operating room nurse manager. She assisted in the design and development of the first ambulatory surgical suite within the hospital and in the area.

Betty retired from CMC after more than 40 years, but found that she still wanted to be active. She took a position with Northeastern Eye Institute in Scranton, as an OR nurse, working there for several years. Betty retired again and with Al, moved to Fountain Hills.

Once settled in Arizona, she became active in the Shepherd of the Hills Church and was involved in its many charitable events. She joined the bell choir, playing at church services and at various functions in the area. She remained active in all those and many other events until the onset of her illness.

Betty is survived by her brother, Joseph Sabo and wife, Ann Marie; her daughter, Laura Klansek Riley and husband, William, Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Linden Aiden Riley, Tessa Gioia Riley, Stephanie Jordan Riley and David Heath Klansek; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her brother, Frank, and his wife, Eileen.

Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 10, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 16150 E. El Lago Blvd., Fountain Hills, Ariz. Interment will be at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix, Ariz., on Monday, Feb. 13, at 10 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, consider making a donation in her name to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity of your choice.

I was very saddened to hear of Betty's passing. My admiration of her and love of the OR led me to being a surgical nurse for 40 years. She made learning fun. I graduated CMC class of 1969 and never forgot her. My sympathy to her family.
