Eugene S. Kusnierz of Cedar Avenue, Scranton, passed away suddenly on May 30, at home.
Gene was born Nov. 9, 1950, in Pittston, Pa., the son of the late Gervase and Jean Rakowicz Kusnierz. Spending most of his life in Scranton, Gene graduated from Scranton Technical High School before entering the United States Air Force. Gene served his country in the Vietnam War as an aircraft mechanic while stationed at Udorn AFB,Thailand.
Gene was employed for many years as a school bus driver for the Scranton School District until his retirement. He was an active member of VFW Post 3451 in Scranton.
An avid baseball fan, he especially enjoyed rooting for his beloved Phillies. Gene could frequently be heard extolling the virtues of, or complaining about the shortcomings of, the Phillies and Eagles. He loved cars (Corvettes), music (especially Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead), reading, trying new recipes in the kitchen and home brewing. He also enjoyed fishing and camping with his friends and shooting the breeze with his buddies at the VFW and local tavern.
Gene was a loving uncle to his three nieces, Kate (Josh Mildon), Rachel and Caroline O'Pecko, with whom he spent many holidays and summers as they grew, always looking forward to his annual Fourth of July visit. He is survived by his sister, Bernadette and brother-in-law, Paul O'Pecko, of Westerly, R.I.; his nieces and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his sister, Carol Kusnierz.
During his final journey, maybe, just maybe, Gene will finally get a glimpse of the dark side of the moon.
