Husband, father, friend, brother, doctor; he was all of these and more. Eugene Joseph Roe, M.D. left this earth on June 28, 2021, his wife of 67 years, Anne Casey Roe, at his side. Born in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, on Jan. 18, 1930, to the late Samuel Roe and Teresa Walsh Roe, he leaves his sister, Mary Lou Burke; and a very large clan; children, Paula Roe-Prior and husband, Jack Prior; Eugene Joseph Roe Jr. and his wife, Mary Cullen Roe; Janet Murray and husband, Joe; Christopher Roe and wife, Joanie Gardier Roe; Thomas Roe and wife, Liz Kelley Roe; Marie Hanlon and husband, Michael, and he joins his son, Mark, who died on May 11, 2019. His beloved family also includes 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was proud of his family and their many accomplishments.
Dad was a remarkable man. Energetic, curious, well-read, witty, charming, handsome, as well as a self-professed marble and yo-yo champion. Despite all these gifts, he was a humble man of faith, devoted to his wife, his family and his profession.
A graduate of the University of Scranton and Temple Medical School, Dad established a family practice in Olyphant after serving in the United States Navy. He was a dedicated doctor, who cared deeply for his patients and greatly enjoyed mentoring and teaching the residents of the Scranton Temple-Residency Program (STRP). His excellence in teaching was recognized when he was chosen for the Bost award in 1984, and his service to STRP was recognized with the Founder's award in 1997. In 1969, Dad was appointed director of the Department of Family Practice and served as the president of the Mercy Hospital staff from 1975-77. Retiring after 35 years in private practice, and unable to sit still, he spent the next five years as medical affairs director at Mercy Hospital.
He donated his time and medical talents to the Holy Family residents for many years. He sat on the boards of Mercy Hospital and Telespond and was a member, editor and president for the Lackawanna County Medical Society.
Mom and Dad were members of the Scranton Country Club from 1962 to the present. He enjoyed photography and traveling - as evidenced by photos of Mom from all over the globe. Dad loved a good party, enjoyed the social side of golf, skiing at Elk Mountain, and was master extraordinaire of The New York Times crossword puzzle.
Special thanks to the nurses of Regional Hospital and Dr. Anees Fogley for their exceptional care.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from Church of St. Gregory, 330 North Abington Road, Clarks Green, with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated by the Rev. John M. Lapera, pastor. Interment will be private in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Olyphant, Pa. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

I am deeply sorry for the loss of Dr Roe. He was an incredible man and teacher. He delivered me when I was born then I had the honor of training with him when I was in medical residency. Ethical, kind and intelligent. He will forever have a place on my heart.

My deepest condolences on the passing of Dr. Roe. He was our physician for many, many years. In fact, he delivered my daughter in 1976 and was her physician as well. I have so many wonderful memories of him making house calls when I was growing up. He was so kind and considerate to everyone. He was a man of great honor and integrity who never forgot his patients. He attended family funerals which was so unbelievably touching. My heart goes out to all of you and his legacy will live on in the wonderful family he has.

Words cannot express how sorry I am for your loss Dr Roe was a great man. To me he was the best. So many great memories. And the Blueberries. In the Jewish religion there´s a word called Mensch (a person of honor or integrity). Dr Roe exemplified that to the truest form. To the whole Roe Family. My deepest sympathies for your great loss. May his soul Rest In Peace. Marshall Needle.

Although we had no recent contact, we have many fond and valuable memories of our friend and neighbor, in addition to the Family Physician. I will never forget the day he called me at work to inform me, not my wife, that we will be having twins! If I may, I wish to share the sorrow for your loss.

My sincere condolences on your family's loss. Dr Roe brought me into this world and was my doc for many years. My favorite memory of him was on my wedding day...he was driving by my house as I was getting in the limo to leave for the church and he stopped and jumped in the back of the limo to give me a hug! He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.
