Florence Shaffer Obituary

Florence Simon Shaffer, a lifelong Scranton resident, died Monday afternoon in the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene H. "Yussie" Shaffer, on Jan. 29, 2005.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Adolph J. and Ida Hinerfeld Simon, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. She was a member of AMIT Women, the Jewish Community Center and Beth Shalom Congregation, where she had been named the Beth Shalom Mother of the Year.

Florence was an enormously caring person, who had both an open house and an open table to anyone in need. Her charity truly knew no bounds. A dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, she took great delight in her grandchildren and will be remembered by all who knew her.

Kind acknowledgment is to be made to Rabbi Samuel Sandhaus and the second- floor staff of the Jewish Home for the dedicated care shown to Florence during her stay.

Surviving are a daughter, Alma Lee Shaffer, Scranton, with whom she resided; her grandchildren, Trudi Shaffer Hargis and husband, Blake, Albany, N.Y.; and Samuel Nathan Shaffer, Columbus, Ohio; daughter-in-law, Lynn Kaufer Shaffer, Scranton; as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; great-great-nieces, great-reat-nephews; and cousins.

She was also preceded in death by her much-beloved son, Jay Barry Shaffer; and sisters, Dorothy Roza, Beatrice Fink and Jeanette Simon.

The funeral will be today at 12:30 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Yisroel Brotsky. Interment in Dalton Jewish Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service. Shiva will be observed at the Jewish Home, 1101 Vine St., Scranton. Friends may call during shiva today from 6:30 to 9 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. until noon, 1:30 to 4 and 6:30 to 9; Friday, 10 until noon and 1:30 to 3; Saturday from 8 to 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday 10 until noon, 1:30 to 4 and 6:30 to 9.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jay Barry Shaffer Fund of the Scranton Hebrew Day School, 530 Monroe Ave., Scranton, PA 18510; the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa., 1101 Vine St., Scranton, PA 18510; or to the donor's favorite charity.
