Genevieve Brill Baron Cost

Genevieve Cost Obituary

Genevieve Brill Baron Cost, R.N., 89, of Scranton, died Thursday afternoon at Moses Taylor Hospital. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Baron, in 1949, and her second husband, Carmine Cost, in 1990.

Born in Simpson, daughter of the late Maximillian and Anna Para Brill, she was a 1938 graduate of Fell Twp. High School and a 1942 graduate of Bellevue Hospital School of Nursing, New York City. Genevieve lived the majority of her life in Scranton and was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Peter's Cathedral. She was a registered nurse in numerous states and worked in a multitude of capacities. Her career as a public health nurse of Pennsylvania spanned 30 years. She was a member of the Bellevue Hospital Alumni Association, a member and past president of the Walter Paciga VFW Post Auxiliary, Simpson, and a member of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, where she also served in elected officer's positions.

Grammy was a one-of-a-kind mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was honest, trustworthy and generous to a fault. She made numerous trips with her family to Daytona Beach and Walt Disney World. She enjoyed gardening. Her flowers and greenery were always in bloom, her crocheted afghans were meticulous works of art and her apple pie could not be topped. Grammy loved her daughter and lived for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. There is nothing she wouldn't do for them, and she gave the gift of culture with both dance and music lessons. She provided her family with trips to Broadway, ice shows and numerous fireworks displays. Last but not least, she loved a great march. She will always be remembered for tap dancing in the kitchen and clapping her hands to the beat of a Sousa march. She could never be replaced or imitated and was truly one of a kind. She died surrounded by her loving family.

Surviving are her one and only loving daughter, Catherine Anne Baron, Scranton, who was her tireless caregiver and closest friend; two granddaughters, Larissa Monacelli, Scranton; and Hollyanne Kupinski, Clarks Summit; a grandson, Thomas Baron, Scranton; five great-grandchildren, Marisol, Catherine Anne, Carmine, Clarke and Mariano; and her little white kitty, Dymphna.

She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Cory Thomas Hoover.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Cathedral, Scranton. The family will receive friends in the church from 9:30 until time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, Clarks Summit, PA 18411. To leave a message of condolence, visit www.legacy.com. Arrangements provided by the Edward J. Chomko Funeral Home, 254-268 Railroad Ave., West Scranton.
