Germaine M. Matylewicz, 89, of Scranton, passed away Saturday evening at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert C. Matylewicz Sr., who died in 2021.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Anna Szpaier Drapek. She was a graduate of West Scranton High School. Germaine was employed for 38 years at Andrew Brown's Drug Store, in South Scranton, where she was blessed to spend day in and day out working next to her "second family."
She was a devoted member of St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral.
Germaine was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her children, grandchildren and her newest joy, her great-granddaughters, who brought her many smiles. She also enjoyed sitting on her porch visiting neighbors, especially Paul and Allan, and catching up on Hallmark movies. She waited with happy smiles when her son, Mark; godchild, Jill Kowalski; and Mariam, who is now and forever a family member, cared for her frequently.
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Robert Jr. and Tamara Matylewicz, of York, Pa.; and Mark and Sharon Matylewicz, of Old Forge; five grandchildren, Maurya and fiancé, Aidan James; Jarid and Madison Matylewicz, all of San Diego; Kelsi Matylewicz and husband, William Bidwell, Old Forge; and Alesia Matylewicz and Phillip Sottile, Old Forge; great-granddaughters, Karter and Charlie Bidwell; a sister-in-law, Mildred (Matylewicz) and Robert Niedzielski, of Kingston, N.Y.; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon, in 1967; a brother, Stanley Drapek; and a sister, Jeanne Kowalski.
The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Geisinger Community Medical Center, particularly the ICU and sixth floor, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their kindness and exceptional care.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 9:30 a.m. from the Nicholas Chomko Funeral Home, 1132 Prospect Ave., Scranton, with Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Cathedral, 529 E. Locust St., Scranton. Interment to follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society.
