John Murgia Obituary

John M. "Tip" Murgia, Carbondale, died Sunday at his residence after an illness. His wife of 55 years is the former Maria Chellino.

Born in Limestone Township, son of the late Raymond and Pauline Murgia, he resided in Carbondale since he was a young child. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, and an Army veteran of World War II. He was self-employed as an accountant for 53 years, owning the Mellow and Murgia Accounting Firm, Carbondale.

He was a graduate of Carbondale public schools and the University of Scranton. He was former president of the Health Services Foundation of Northeast Pennsylvania Inc. and former chairman of the Lackawanna County Railroad Authority. He was treasurer for Friends of State Sen. Robert J. Mellow, honorary director of the Elkview Country Club and a member of the Pennsylvania Society of Public Accountants and the National Society of Public Accountants. He was a former member of the Lackawanna County Industrial Development Authority and former member of the Lackawanna County Economy Development Zone Authority.

Also surviving are a daughter, Mary Frances "Miffy," wife of Matt Froncek, Crystal Lake; two brothers, Joseph and Anthony Murgia; and four sisters, Ann Bonavita, Mary Murgia, Regina Reardon and Teresa Connolly, all of New Jersey; a grandson, Matthew Froncek; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home, 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with Mass at 9 in St. Rose of Lima Church, to be celebrated by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn, pastor. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

Friends may call Wednesday, 5 to 8 p.m.
