John Prebich Obituary

John Prebich, 96, of Mayfield, died Monday at Forest City Nursing Home. His wife, the former Jennie Alampi, died in 1999.

Born in Simpson, son of the late Andrew and Mary Brezichko Prebich, John was a member of St. Basil's Russian Orthodox Church, Simpson, and the Russian Brotherhood Organization of the USA. He served in the Army during World War II and was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

John was a coal miner for more than 26 years and before retirement was employed by Farview State Hospital, Waymart, for 10 years.

John was a loving and devoted father and grandfather who brought great joy to his family and friends. In his earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and was an avid New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica and guitar.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to nurses, especially Karen Dekle who has assisted him since 2011, the aides and staff of Hospice and Home Health of Lackawanna County, and Dr. Haley and staff for their time and care.

Surviving are five sons and their wives, John and Carol, Cherry Hill, N.J.; Andrew and Mary Grace, Carbondale; Philip and Sharon, Mayfield; Joseph and Michele, Carbondale; and Mark and Josie, Manila, Philippines; two daughters, Kathryn Shaw, who was his caregiver for seven years, Mayfield; and Ann Marie Dye, Las Vegas; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Millon, Waymart; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Joseph; and four sisters, Anna Mikulak, Helen Tayfun, Mary Dechnik and Julie Pollick.

The funeral will be Thursday with a Requiem Service at 9:30 a.m. in St. Basil's Russian Orthodox Church, 33 Midland St., Simpson, by the Very Rev. Mitred Archpriest David J. Hritcko. Interment will be with military honors in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Greenfield Twp.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Basil's Russian Orthodox Church or VNA Hospice and Home Health of Lackawanna County, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, PA 18447.

So sad to hear of Uncle John's passing. We are praying for God's guidance for all of you during this time of loss. He is in a place where he suffers no more and is watching down over you all, till you meet again.
I will never forget the time I had to drive Johnny out to Vegas so he could give his car to Ann Marie. He was too funny all the way out there. Now I had never traveled to the western US let alone driven very far from Waymart. He told me from the beginning of the trip " we aren't in any hurry". Driving thru Utah I was just in awe of the scenery and wanted to take pictures. So we pulled over and I did so. I jumped down about 2 feet off of one rock formation to get a different angle. I was only out of the car 5 minutes. And out came Johnny..."come on we gotta get going!" I said Uncle what happened to we aren't in any hurry?!" We had a great time on our excursion. He was too cute and will be missed.
