John Sompel Obituary

John A. Sompel, 86, of Moosic, died Friday at home. He was the husband of Barbara Hollow Sompel. They were married for 63 years.

Born in Scranton and formerly of Elizabeth, N.J., son of the late John and Felicia Zaleski Sompel, he was formerly employed by Wakefern Corp., Elizabeth, N.J., as a forklift operator. John was a member of Teamsters Local 863, a member of St. Ann's Basilica Church, and a veteran of the United States Air Force with the rank of airman third class.

He is also survived by his son, Mark and wife, Anna, Elizabeth, N.J.; granddaughter, Jessica; a brother, Ronald S. and wife, Christine, Moosic; a sister, Stella Saranchuk, Moosic; and several nieces and nephews.

John was also preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Nitkowski.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica Church, Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst, with full military honors.

There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements by Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton, PA 18504.

So sorry to hear of John's passing..I would see him from time to time at Gerritys when I worked there. We always hugged and said we love you cuz...Rip John
