Joseph A. Guziewicz, 76, of Jessup, formerly of Throop, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 22, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart. His wife of 54 years is the former Donna Canevari.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Joseph Guziewicz and the late Helen Steger Guzevich. He was a graduate of Throop High School, Class of 1964. He was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. During the Vietnam War he served as a radio operator Sgt. E 5 with the Third Battalion, Third Marines, having fought in Operation KHE/SANH and Operation Prairie II, III and IV, and many others which earned him the Combat Action Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Ribbon, National Defense Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary for Service in the Dominican Republic, Vietnamese Service Medal with two Bronze stars and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
After the war, he was employed at Tobyhanna Army Depot until his retirement. He also worked as a reserve police officer in Throop Borough and at International Harvester. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Peckville and was a life member of the Northeast Detachment of the Marine Corps League 304, life member of the Jessup VFW Post 5544 and also a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve.
He loved muscle cars and owned a 1969 SS 396 Chevelle, and a 2008 Mustang Bullet. His enjoyment also came from his family and working in his garden.
The family would like to thank the doctors and the nursing staff at Regional Hospital for the exceptional care they always gave to Joe.
Also surviving: a son, Joseph Jude Guziewicz, Eynon; a sister, Marilyn Kubic and husband Richard, Peckville; three grandchildren, Emily, Lilyanna and Abigail; and several nieces, nephews. He is also survived by his in-laws, Russell Canevari, Kim Canevari and Joseph Canevari, Deborah Evans, Maria Chopko and Cara Dubas.
He was preceded in death by a godchild, Scott Kubic; sister-in-law, Sheila Carr; and a brother-in-law, Richard Evans.
The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, from the Louis M. Margotta Funeral Home, 511 Church St., Jessup, with Mass at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville. Interment at a later date. Friends may call from 11 to 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marine Corps League.
