Joseph J. Zimmie Jr., 90, a lifelong resident of Dickson City, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton after an illness. His loving wife of 63 years is the former Dolores Zadjura.
Born and raised in Dickson City, son of the late Joseph and Bertha Gruzeski Zimmie Sr., he was a graduate of Dickson City High School and was of the Catholic faith. He honorably served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War, and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal. After serving in the Army, he worked as a meteorologist early in his career for Pan Am Grand Turk until 1960. Later, he worked at the Globe Store and Oppenheim's in Scranton, as an advertising manager, until 1980. He then worked as a postal carrier for the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1994.
He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, collecting (buying and selling) antiques and was an avid Penn State football fan.
In addition to his wife, Dolores, he is survived by two daughters, Joann and husband, Tony Morris, of Kingston; and Sandra and husband, Philip Shockley, of Elkton, Md.; one sister, Joan Kerr, of Harleysville, Pa.; three grandchildren, Maura McAllister, of York, Pa.; Ian McAllister, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Michael Ferraiolo, of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Zimmie; two infant sons, Mark and Joseph Zimmie; infant grandson, Brian Ferraiolo; and one brother, William Zimmie.
There are no funeral home viewing hours. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements by the John J. Turko & Sons Funeral Home, Dickson City.
