Kaliah Schmidt Obituary

Kaliah Marie Victoria Schmidt of Scranton passed away unexpectedly at Geisinger Community Medical Center on Feb. 26, 2021, due to complications with Type 1 diabetes, at the age of 18.

Kaliah was born Jan. 3, 2003; she was the daughter of Becky Smith and Matthew Schmidt.

Kaliah was preceded in death by her grandfathers, LaVerne Schmidt and Joseph Bentler; aunt, Lucille Haynes; cousins, Alicia Strasburger, Victoria Monta and Michael Harmer. Kaliah leaves behind her grandmother, Eleanor Schmidt; her nana, Bonnie Jezorwski; her brother, Jessi Schmidt; and a sister, Laelah Schmidt; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Kaliah attended Scranton High School and aspired to be a photographer. She loved sunflowers, butterflies, singing, dancing, and hanging out with her friends and family. She was an avid animal lover who lived her life to the fullest. Kaliah was a great listener, she was everyone's shoulder. She was a free spirit who had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. Her smile would light up the darkest of days. She was everyone's friend. Kaliah was fiercely protective of her loved ones, she didn't let anyone's opinions alter her own. She loved her dad, her best friend, Destiny Rodriguez, and her boyfriend, Austin Cole. She was her mama's best friend and will always be her nana's girl. She will forever be missed. She's forever our angel.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at noon at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's St., Scranton. Due to COVID-19, family may call from 10:30 a.m. until noon and friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m.

It´s been a few months and Kaliah crosses my mind at least once everyday. Her laugh was infectious, & she was sunshine in human form. We became close friends fast and she was like a sister to me. We always found a way to get into some typical teenage trouble like staying out later than we should have been. I remember cooking buttered noodles in her kitchen while singing the spice girls, playing basketball with each other in gym class, and stopping on the side of the road to pet a horse on the way home from the lake. The chances of existing at the same time as Kaliah are so slim and I´m blessed everyday to say she was one of my closest friends. Kaliah, I hold all of our memories so close to my heart, life here is so painfully dull without you. I don´t understand but I know God is gonna make purpose out of this pain, I love you and I´m forever blessed to have met and known such a pure soul as yours.
