Kimberly Anne Kern Shafer, beloved wife, daughter and sister, passed peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Feb. 7, 2021.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Patricia Kern, Factoryville, and David Huw Kern, Clarks Summit. A graduate of Scranton Prep and the University of Scranton, Kim completed her BA in criminal justice before transitioning to a fulfilling career in education as a technical author and editor of textbooks. Having covered a wide range of complex topics, Kim carried her passion for research outside of the office as a skilled discerner of antique items. Possessing a true entrepreneurial spirit, her hobby became a thriving business as an antique dealer specializing in Victorian-era items. Known locally, she also participated in showcases out-of-state.
It is through her work that she met her loving husband, Robert Shafer, Clarks Summit. Celebrating 23 years of marriage, their years devoted to each other were filled with traveling to their favorite destinations, sharing their favorite movies and multitudes of happiness.
Kim will be remembered for her kindness and compassion. A lifelong native of Northeastern Pa., she was a volunteer at GCMC and the Everhart Museum. Having been raised with a deep appreciation for music, Kim had an affinity for Broadway musicals and was well-versed in theater trivia. Saying Kim loved to read is an understatement. Having compiled a personal library to envy, her family will always fondly remember her curled up with a good book.
She is survived by her sister, Abigail Kern; her brother-in-law, Frank Shafer and wife, Alta; her niece, Erika Krock and husband, Tom, as well as their children.
Services for the family will be private. A celebration of her life will be held later this year when those whose lives have been touched by Kimberly's can safely gather. Arrangements are under the care of Anthony P. Litwin Jr. Funeral Homes Inc., Factoryville.
