Margaret Mary Michinski, 94, of the Nativity section of Scranton, went to her final resting place on Saturday after a long battle with polycystic kidney disease. Married for 69 years, she leaves behind her loving husband Eugene.
Mary was born in Scranton, and lived almost all of her years within three blocks of the home in which she was born. She was the daughter of the late James and Catherine Gorsline Murray, also of Nativity. She attended Nativity Grade School.
For most of her life, she spent her time with children. Whether as a homemaker and taking care of her kids, Gene, Eddie, and Chrissy, or "minding," as she liked to say, dozens of children over more than 80 years. Often, this was done in her home, but she also babysat for children in their own homes. She loved watching little ones, and also brought this love for children to Whittier Elementary, working as a lunch mom for more than 15 years. She was a lifelong member of Nativity of our Lord Church in South Side.
More than anything else, Mary loved family. To those who did not call her "mom," she was called Mimi or Mamie. She was so very proud of her husband and took incredible delight in her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Many of the highlights of her life included her beloved summer vacations to the shore for play time and chardonnay, Christmas at the family home and traveling to see her grandchildren across the United States. Petite in size, she dominated a room and was often the charmer of any social event.
In addition to kids, she loved animals, and often spoke of Buddy, her beloved mutt from her childhood. She loved music, and her favorite performer was Nat King Cole. She was always "Unforgettable," and that's how her family and friends will always remember her.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are sons, Eugene and wife Debbie, Springville; Eddie and fiancée Kenenne Alderman, Alaska; and daughter Chris Conner, and husband Walter, Delaware; six grandchildren, Andrea Michinski, Caitlin Michinski, Brittany Conner, Deanna Michinski, McKenzie Conner and Quinn Michinski; and additional daughter-in-law Kelly Michinski, Forty Fort.
She was preceded in death by her brother, William, sister Joan and grandson, Michael.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of Allied Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing, Fresenius Kidney Care, as well as Colts drivers Dave and John, for the exceptional kindness shown to Mary.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. from the August J. Haas Funeral Home, Inc., 202 Pittston Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Nativity Of Our Lord Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard St., to be celebrated by Rev. I was a teacher at Whittier for 30 yrs. Mary was part of the fabric of the school. Whether she was working in the cafeteria or waiting outside for a child she was babysitting for. What a happy, caring person she was. Always friendly, offering a smile and a wave. She will be missed.
