Maryann Simrell, 86, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 2, surrounded by her family. Her husband of 60 years, Francis Simrell, passed away in 2016.
Born in Scranton, Maryann was a daughter of the late Howard F. and Helen Stanzeski Gilday, she was educated in Scranton schools and was a graduate of South Catholic High School. She was a member of Nativity of Our Lord Church at St. Theresa of Calcutta Parish. As a homemaker, Maryann's world was her large, extended family. She also loved crocheting, camping, reading and spending time with her family.
Maryann was a beautiful, unique individual. Her laugh, her wisdom and her compassion always shone through. Her unconditional love and devotion to her family is what will always stand out to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her peaceful spirit, love and joy will live on in their memories. She was loved by all who knew her, and will be deeply missed.
Surviving are eight children, Deborah McAndrew and husband, Joseph; Francis Simrell and wife, Cathy; Donna Gotsch, Susan Armstrong, Sharon Keen, Lori Figurelli, Paul Simrell and wife, Lisa; and Rebecca Simrell; a sister, Barbara Hoover; a brother, William Gilday; 21 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Joanne Shea, who passed away on March 9.
The funeral will be Wednesday, with Mass at 10 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery will follow. Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home, 1900 Pittston Ave. Those attending Mass on Wednesday are asked to proceed directly to the church.
