Maureen Nepa Matylewicz, 84, of Jermyn, died Thursday, April 14, after a three-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, the Rev. Stephen Matylewicz, who died April 19, 2021, and her first husband, Leo Nepa.
Born in Simpson, the daughter of the late Maurice and Julia Mehalco Wayman, she was a graduate of Ben Franklin High School, Carbondale. Maureen wed Leo Nepa in 1956. After his passing, she married the Rev. Stephen Matylewicz, with whom she spent 50 happily married years. Together they enjoyed a family of "Yours, mine, and ours," consisting of children, Michael Nepa and wife, D'Nan, Carbondale; Lisa Gillette and husband, Matthew, Carbondale; Laura Ashman and husband, Thomas, Mohrsville; Gary Matylewicz and wife, Melanie, Scranton; Steven Matylewicz, Olyphant; and the late Julie Martin and her surviving husband, Andy Martin. She also had 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maureen was a lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Carbondale. Maureen enjoyed spending summers at her cottage at Elk Lake in Waymart, especially her boat rides, and winters in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., with her many friends. Maureen was a tremendous cook, a skilled bowler and a devoted Yankees fan. She also enjoyed sporting events of her children and grandchildren.
Maureen was owner of Times Two Consignment Store, Eynon, for many years. She was also a member of a neighborhood card club with the same eight women for over 50 years, and it was here that all of Carbondale's problems were solved.
In addition to her husbands, Maureen was also preceded in death by her daughter, Julie Matylewicz Martin; her grandchild, Kristopher Bucklaw; and her siblings, Dennis Wayman, Shirley Kohut and Delores Thompson.
The family would especially like to thank caregivers, Chrissy, Sara and Chenoa, as well as the staff of Ellen Memorial and VNA Hospice who went above and beyond in caring for Maureen.
The funeral will be Wednesday, April 20, with services at 11 a.m. in Trinity Episcopal Church, 58 River St., Carbondale, by the Rev. William McGinty. Interment will follow in Canaan Corners Cemetery, Waymart. Friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Julie Matylewicz Martin Children's Library Fund at the Carbondale Public Library, 5 N. Main St., Carbondale, PA 18407.
