Mildred O'Brien Obituary

Mildred O'Brien, 95, of Scranton, died Sunday at Marywood Heights. She was the widow of Joseph T. O'Brien, who died in 2016.

Born in Avoca, she was the daughter of the late Katherine and Martin Marley. She was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Parish, later St. Paul of the Cross and St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish.

A graduate of Seton Catholic High School, Pittston, she was employed by Bell Telephone for many years and later worked for Suburban Casuals and Novick Chemical, prior to retirement.

Millie and Joe enjoyed dancing at the Big Band Society, traveling the country, playing the slots at Mohegan Sun Casino, and cheering on Penn State football. Most importantly, she loved spending time with their children and grandchildren, attending their many games, dance recitals and school activities. Millie was an avid bowler at South Side Lanes for many years.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Pliska, Duryea; three sons, Joseph O'Brien and wife, Joan, Glens Falls, N.Y.; Thomas O'Brien and wife, Patricia, Moscow; and Mark O'Brien and wife, Linda, Scranton; six grandchildren, James and Julia Pliska, Marley and Emily O'Brien, and Callie and Abbie O'Brien; her sisters-in-law, Sally Marley, Jackie Marley and Pat Mills; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lois Hennigan and her husband, Leo; her brothers, Robert and Martin Marley; and her brother-in-law, James Mills.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Marywood Heights for their care and compassion over the last several years.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton. Friends may call Saturday, from 9 to 10:15, at the church.
