Nancy Walsh Obituary

Nancy Walsh, R.N., 74, a resident of Roaring Brook Twp., died Tuesday, March 6, at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. She was the widow of James J. Walsh Sr. who passed away March 23, 2004.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Francis T. and Ann (Hunt) Battle. Nancy graduated from South Catholic High School and earned her R.N. from the Scranton State Hospital School of Nursing. Nancy spent her career caring for patients in local hospitals and in their homes. She was an active member of the Church of St. Eulalia in Roaring Brook Twp.

"Fancy Nancy," as she was affectionately known, will be remembered for her devotion to her faith and family. Nancy's children and grandchildren were her pride and joy and were the fortunate recipients of her love and attention. For her, nursing was more vocation than career, and she was defined by the caring and compassionate nature that made her a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister and nurse. She lived life on purely her own terms. With a quick wit and sassy demeanor, she kept those around her on their toes. Always looking for a good bargain, she never met a coupon that she didn't like. She was well-known for her green thumb and counted the days until she was able to dig in the dirt each spring.

Despite her small stature, Nancy fought with every ounce of her Irish pride and the spirit of a giant. She will be sorely missed and will live large in the memories of those fortunate enough to love her.

The family is beyond grateful for the care that Nancy received at Geisinger CMC. The team of trauma surgeons worked exhaustively to give her every chance of recovery. The nursing care that she received in the ICU and PCU was beyond compare. Each of these compassionate individuals was what she referred to as a "nurse's nurse." This is the highest compliment that she could bestow.

Nancy is survived by her children James J. Walsh Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Roaring Brook Twp.; Michael J. Walsh and his wife, Cathy, of Dunmore; Terriann McAllister and her husband, Scott, of Jefferson Twp.; and Erin Pencek and her husband, Jason, of Roaring Brook Twp.; her grandchildren, Jason and James Walsh, of Roaring Brook Twp.; Bridget, Kaitlin and Matthew Walsh, of Dunmore; Kyler, Brayden and Ryliann McAllister, of Jefferson Twp.; Anna, Nora and Lila Pencek, of Roaring Brook Twp.; her siblings, John Battle and his wife, Gail, of Troup, Texas; Joseph Battle and his wife, Dorothy, of Scranton; Maureen Sodano and her husband, Michael, of New Port Richey, Fla.; and James Battle and his wife, Denise, of Dalton; her sisters-in-law, Marie Battle, Gail Battle, Joan Rowland and Joyce Rinaldi; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Battle and Francis Battle, and her brother-in-law, Thomas Walsh.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Church of St. Eulalia, 214 Blue Shutters Road in Roaring Brook Twp., to be celebrated by Monsignor John W. Jordan. Interment with rite of committal will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Covington Twp.

Viewing will be Saturday, 8 a.m. until the time of the Mass, at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Eulalia Parish, (Memo: 3rd Cornerstone Campaign), 214 Blue Shutters Road, Roaring Brook Twp., PA 18444. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes and Cremation Services LLC in Spring Brook Twp.
