Paul G. Butler, 98, a lifelong resident of Sterling Twp., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2022, at Julia Ribaudo Extended Care Center in Lake Ariel. He was the husband of the late Faye (Blose) Butler, and the couple was married for 49 years.
Born in Sterling Twp., he was the son of the late Howard and Mable (Musgrave) Butler. Paul graduated from Sterling schools and after a time working on his parents farm, joined the United States Army on Aug. 31, 1945. During his time in the Army, Paul was a chauffeur for a general who was involved in the Nuremberg trials and was able to witness the tribunal first hand. He then worked as a carpenter throughout Monroe County.
As a handyman, Paul could fix anything and wouldn't hesitate to help a neighbor or friend when asked. Well respected in Sterling Twp., he helped to establish HOST (Historians of Sterling Twp.) and was a "walking encyclopedia" of the township's history. Paul was an avid walker and looked forward to sitting on the front porch talking with his grandson. He was very proud of his family and especially loved when they were all able to spend time together.
Paul is survived by his children, Elaine Shaw of Seneca, S.C., Barry Butler and his wife, Shirley of Sterling Twp., Paulette Nicholas and her husband, Tim of Mount Cobb, Rosemary Maconeghy and her companion, David Cross of Moscow and Kelli Jarrow and her husband, Jeff of Sterling Twp.; his grandchildren, Tina Decker, Kevin Kelly, Amy VanLeuven, Brian Edwards, Sherry Pontosky and Bob Moulton; his great-grandchildren, Hannah, Tara, Jack, Bradley, Nicholas, Jeffrey, Jenna and Matthew; his great-great-grandchildren, Norah, Levi and Luke; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Loretta Gravel, Esther Wilmot, Francis Butler, Kenneth Butler and Ronald Butler.
