Philip Rosenstein Obituary

Philip Michael Rosenstein, 72, of Clarks Summit, his family's hero and patriarch, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 3 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born on Sept. 6, 1948, he was the eldest child of the late Eugene and Dorothy Bricker Rosenstein. He spent his childhood in Scranton alongside brother, Jay (Carole) and sister, Lyn (Colleen). After graduating from Scranton Central High School, he matriculated to Penn State University where he would spend some of his most formative years before graduating in 1971. While there, and when he wasn't bartending at the Lion's Den, he was with his best friend, Steve Weisberg, who became like a brother to him. During his years in State College, he also met the love of his life, fellow Nittany Lion, Bonnie (Mitchell). They married in 1972 and built the family of their dreams with daughters, Jan Schoenberg (Jason) and Pam Rubenstein (Scott); and son, Doug (Carly). The later births of grandchildren, Jenna, Jillian and Juliet Schoenberg, Tory and Clark Rubenstein, and Carter and Jax Rosenstein brought him endless joy. Whether playing Old Maid, making funny faces at one another or eating breakfast together at the kitchen island, he was at his best when he was with them and they will miss him more than words can say.

Phil spent his professional career in the wholesale produce company his grandfather founded, Wm. Rosenstein & Sons, with the last 11 years alongside his son. His work ethic and the honest and fair manner in which he conducted himself earned him the respect of all those he encountered.

Throughout his life, Phil volunteered his time and energy to various organizations he held near and dear. He served as a board member of the Jewish Community Center and president of both Glen Oak Country Club and Wave-Oak Realty Company. He was also an avid supporter of St. Francis of Assisi Kitchen.

Outside of his family, Phil had several passions he enjoyed with friends that were like family. Weekend mornings were spent with his running group, weekday afternoons were for playing racquetball with his JCC buddies, Tuesday evenings in spring and summer were for golfing with the guys, Wednesday nights were dedicated to dinner with a loyal crew, and a fall weekend was reserved for a beloved fishing trip to Canada with family and friends. But beyond all of these things, Phil loved the summers he spent in Margate, New Jersey with his family. A morning bike ride on the boards, breakfast at the bagel shop, day time on the beach with everyone, late afternoon on his balcony, and dinner with Bonnie at Steve & Cookies constituted his definition of a perfect day.

His family would like to extend a special thank you to Michael Kondash, D.O. for the incredible friendship, compassion and care he extended to Phil.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at noon in Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore. In respecting COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, please refrain from contact with family members. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Shiva will not be observed.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to www.pancan.org, www.nyulangone.org/give/ or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Such is the case with your family. i remember your dad and mom fondly, not for produce, rather my visits to either deliver the newspaper or to collect. Your parents always made me feel special. My heart is aching upon hearing of Phil´s passing. He and I were very close friends when we were adolescents in Scranton. When we met at the CHS 50th reunion we recalled having a million laughs together and more fun than we had a right to.

He was a great guy, loyal friend, and devoted family man who will always have a place in my heart.

Condolences to the Rosenstein family and may your memories of this wonderful man comfort you in these difficult times.
