Stephen J. Dougherty passed away on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, at Geisinger Medical Center after a brief illness. Born and raised in Dunmore, he was the son of the late John and Lenore O'Connor Dougherty.
Growing up in Dunmore, he spent countless hours playing basketball at Schautz Stadium, establishing himself as a local legendary player. His skills led him to All-State honors while playing high school basketball at Scranton Preparatory School. Steve was highly recruited out of high school by numerous Division I college basketball programs. He accepted a scholarship to Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, playing in the Southern Conference and competing against numerous future NBA stars. After graduating from college, he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers but declined in order to pursue business interests which spanned a 40-year successful career in the equipment industry.
During his life on the basketball court, in college and in business, Steve developed lifelong friendships. His loyalty and generosity will forever be remembered by his family and friends.
Steve is survived by his wife, the former Mary Grace Loughney; his three sons, Charles and his wife, Keri; Matthew and his wife, Vita; James and his wife, Molly; grandchildren, Emma, Brooke, Jack, Maisie and Madelyn Dougherty; sisters, Mary, Lenore, Anne and Marie; nephews, nieces and cousins.
