Thomas Kettel Obituary

Thomas John Kettel, age 67, passed away surrounded by his loved ones at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, Pa., on April 16, 2024.

Tom grew up in a loving home and attended Scranton Technical High School. Son of the late Andrew and Ruth Schreiber Kettel, in his youth, he enjoyed "hanging out behind the High" with his good friend, Kavy, and his other South Side pals." Tom spent many years working alongside his father and brother, Drew, at Brier's Market in South Scranton. Tom was a kind soul and a loving son and brother.

Tom was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Scranton. He was a longtime member of the South Side Bachelor's Club where he spent many hours playing darts and drinking a cold beer with his other South Side buddies. He was an avid Eagles and Penn State football fan. He enjoyed spending time in Atlantic City with his loving partner, Sharon McIntyre, who passed in 2012. In recent years, as a resident of Linwood Nursing Home, he enjoyed "the little things" like going for an ice cream cone, playing cards with his sisters and his cousin, Mary Jane Schreiber, and coloring beautiful pictures. Tom was a quiet man with a subtle, quick wit who made friends easily and will be missed by many. Despite Tom's challenges, he would always greet you with a sincere "how you doin'."

Tom is survived by his sister, Andrea Lucke, who took amazing care of him during the past few years; his brother, Drew (Judy) Kettel; and his sister, Lisa (Dan) Sutter; 10 nieces and nephews and 18 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Jerry Lucke, Scranton.

The family thanks Linwood Nursing Home and the staff of Hospice of Sacred Heart for their wonderful care of Tom over the past 18 months.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, by the Rev. Paul A. McDonnell, O.S.J., pastor. Interment, private at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the church Friday morning from 9 to 10. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Epilepsy Foundation at give.epilepsy.com or to the Dravet Syndrome Foundation at dravetfoundation.org. To leave an online condolence, visit www.augusthaasfuneralhome.com.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tom at Linwood Nursing and rehab center when my mother became a resident there. Tom was so kind and I enjoyed talking with about his art work. The center is displaying his work, I'm so sorry to hear of his passing and will miss visiting with him. My condolences to his family especially his sister Andrea whom I had the pleasure visiting with at Linwood.
