Thomas Schouten Obituary

Thomas Allan Schouten, 69, a resident of Clarks Summit, died Tuesday at home after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Donna Mulka Schouten.

Born in Passaic, N.J., son of the late John and Mary Schouten, Tom was raised and educated in Clifton, N.J. He was an avid New York Giants and Yankees fan. Growing up, he was an excellent baseball player, who would often spend time watching the Yankees practice at their old stadium. Tom loved spending his time working outdoors, walking, travel and collecting sports memorabilia.

Known for his sharp mind, high energy level, commitment and dependability, Tom was a tireless worker who always got the job done. He enjoyed a successful career with the family-owned Giant Markets for 23 years, eventually becoming Giant's general store supervisor of 22 supermarkets. After retiring, he worked at Clarks Summit State Hospital and NEIU for more than a decade.

In 2006, Tom successfully battled prostate cancer, never missing a day's work during his course of treatment.

A quiet, gentle and caring man, Tom was kind to everyone. He was a loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. Devoted to his wife, Donna, he was appreciative of the love and bond they shared, especially during his illness.

Also surviving are a daughter, Patricia Castille and husband, Jay, Phoenix; a son, Thomas and fiancée, Deborah Maykrantz, Potomac Falls, Va.; a stepdaughter, Christina Sossong and husband, Thomas, Audubon, Pa.; two grandchildren, Anthony and Tommy; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce and Jack.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Church, 531 E. Locust St., Scranton. Interment will follow in St. Stanislaus PNCC Cemetery, Minooka section of Scranton.

Friends may call Friday, 4 to 8 p.m., at the Sznyter Funeral Home, 1101 Prospect Ave., Scranton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Stanislaus Polish National Catholic Church, 529 E. Locust St., Scranton, PA 18505; or the American Cancer Society, 712 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor, PA 18517.
