Vincent Andriole Obituary

Vincent Anthony Thomas Andriole, M.D., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, April 26, 2015, after a long illness.

Born in Scranton on August 3, 1931, he was the eldest son of the late Dr. Vincent A. and Josephine C. (Cinquegrani) Andriole. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Daria Louise Derose Andriole of Stratford, Conn. His is also survived by his four children, Christina Louise Andriole and her husband, Lukas J. Sturm of Dunstable, Mass.; Charles Andriole and his wife, Lisa of Branford, Conn.; Dr. Katherine P. Andriole of Boston, Mass.; and David Mark Andriole; his brothers, Dr. Joseph P. Andriole and his wife, Nancy of Dunmore, Pa.; and Dr. Richard C. Andriole and his wife, Bonnie of Deerfield, Mass.; a sister, Delores Elaine Reisert of Blackhawk, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Natalie Rose and Tobias Vincent Andriole-Sturm, and Charlie, Rory and Brody Andriole.

Dr. Andriole was Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine, Attending Physician at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and Attending Physician at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut. He received his B.S. degree from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and his M.D. degree from Yale University School of Medicine, completing his postgraduate training at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases/National Institutes of Health, and at Yale University School of Medicine. He served in the Naval Reserve and the USPS/NIH, in Bethesda, Md.

Dr. Andriole, a renowned clinician, teacher, researcher, author and editor, was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Laureate Award of the American College of Physicians and the Bristol Award from the Infectious Disease Society of America, of which he served as President. He also received the Santae Crucis Award from the College of the Holy Cross and was the first faculty member at the Yale School of Medicine to twice receive the Medical Housestaff Teacher of the Year Award. He was greatly loved and respected by his students, including one who devoted a chapter to him in a book about her experience as a medical student at Yale. He authored hundreds of articles, reviews and textbooks on infectious diseases.
