Walter J. Kanavy, 87, of Dunmore, died Saturday, July 24. He is survived by his wife, the former Ellen O'Malley. The couple had been married for 59 years.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Walter and Mae Miskell Kanavy, he was a graduate of South Catholic High School, where he received the Most Valuable Player Award for his accomplishments in basketball. He later graduated from the University of Scranton, earning his master's degree in business. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served from 1956 to 1959. Walter served as a Eucharistic minister in the Roman Catholic Church for 20 years, including serving Mulberry Towers, Adams Avenue Apartments and the Veterans Hospital. He was a man of faith and conviction with a great devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Walter worked for IBM and served as the director of the computer center at the University of Scranton before starting his own computer hardware and software business.
Also surviving are a daughter, Maureen Zaboski and husband, Gerald; two grandchildren; a sister, Kathy Kanavy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Kanavy; a sister, Shirley Kanavy Wolfe; and a brother and sister-in-law, Gen. and Mrs. Jerome F. O'Malley.
Private funeral services were held with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale, and interment in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Arrangements by the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.

Ellen: We are truly sorry for your loss. I wish that I met you and Walt earlier in life. I believe that I could have learned a lot from him. He was a brilliant man.
