Al Tyrrell Obituary
Port Huron - Laurel A. "Al" Tyrrell Jr., age 78, passed away on Sunday, August 5 at Lake Huron Medical Center in Port Huron after a long illness. He was born January 23, 1940 in Knoxville, TN to Laurel A. "Toby" Tyrrell Sr., and Mary Elizabeth (Heptinstall) Tyrrell. He graduated from Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores in 1956, and from Alma College in 1960. He married Earldene "Dene" Simmons on March 26, 1960 at Dunning Memorial Chapel on the Alma College campus.
Known for his great radio voice, Al started his career in radio at WFYC in Alma, moving to Port Huron in 1968 where he became sales manager for WPHM and later continuing with RadioFirst, for a career spanning more than 35 years.
Al was well-known for his passion for and knowledge of fishing and hunting. He and his friend Chuck Muer started the popular Blue Water Salmon Stakes fishing tournament many years ago, and it continues annually.
Al is survived by his wife, Dene, a daughter Lisa Tyrrell of Dallas, TX, grandsons Vincent Tyrrell of Galveston, TX, and Nicholas Pierce of Kimball. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Allan Tyrrell, his parents, and a sister, Mary Carol Wells.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Blue Water Sportfishing Association, First Presbyterian Church of Port Huron, or the Blue Water Humane Society. Al gave me my first job after graduating college at WPHM in sales. I eventually ended up on-air. Loved Al's voiceover skills and it was he that lead me down that path that I still pursue today. A great mentor and boss. Many thanks! Condolences to the entire Tyrrell family.
