Robin Copeland Obituary

Robin Perry Copeland, 56, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, after a three-year battle with brain cancer. A lifelong advocate for young children, Robin taught kindergarten at South Graham Elementary School until illness forced her retirement.
A native of Perquimans County, Robin was born Oct. 4, 1955. She is survived by her husband David; daughter, Holly and husband Victor Hoerst; son, Hunter; granddaughters, Sophie and Ava, all of Alamance County; her mother and stepfather, Lescelles and Zack Robertson of Elizabeth City; sisters, Margo Owens and husband Billy of Hertford; Jane Parr and husband Ron of Tyner; Julie LeMond and husband Sean of Davidson; and sister-in-law, Janet Skinner of Edenton. She was preceded in death by her father, Isaac Peyton Perry, a football standout at Elon and Wake Forest colleges.
Robin began her work as an early-childhood educator in 1977. During this time, she served as director of the Ruby Reid Childcare and Laboratory Teaching Center in Wake Forest. As a kindergarten teacher at South Graham, Robin was named Teacher of the Year and was a member of the Rhythm Sisters.
Her passions included working with all children, compassionate and fair treatment of animals and environmental sustainability. Her greatest passion, however, was reserved for the time she spent with her closest friends and her family, especially her granddaughters, with whom she spent nearly every day of their lives.
A service commemorating her life will be held at 4 p.m., on Friday, March 16, 2012, in the chapel at Rich & Thompson Funeral Home on South Church Street in Burlington by Minister Ron Parr of Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church, Tyner, NC. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials in honor of Robin may be made to the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University, DUMC, Box 3624, Durham, NC 27710; the Hospice League of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215; or to the Humane Society of Alamance County, P.O. David,Holly and Hunter, I just don't have the words to express how sorry I am for your loss, my heart hurts for each of you. So many wonderful memories flood my mind of our days working at the Wild Flour Bakery in Abington, Va. We had a dear friendship at work and outside of work. Holly you are such a part of those memories as well. Whe I got the news that our first grandbaby was going to be a girl, Robin was the one with me to share the moment. She thought I should go by "Big Mamma". I told her that was reserved for her. Robin was a special person and will be missed by all that were blessed to know her. She will forever be "Ethel" to my "Lucy". I loved her dearly. Our hearts and prayers are with you. May God give you each peace. Love, T.J. and Sandy Rayford

Dear David, Holly and Hunter, I am so sorry for your loss. Robin will always hold a special place in my heart and I will always think of her when I hear Nat King Cole. My memories of her include not just her wonderful baking skills, or her kind and generous attitude, but also her loving devotion to her husband and family. She was a joy to know and to work with at the Wild Flour, and her memory lives on in some of our bakery items. We have lost a beautiful person and a loving soul from this earth . Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you now.

Sincerely,
Donna and Tom McIntyre

My children would have loved to have Robin as a teacher. We knew her as a friend and she was so warm and wonderful. In particular, she spoke to the kids like a regular person and they so appreciated that confidence. All the children she taught were so lucky to know her. And so were we.
