Steven Adams Obituary

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Steven "Shay" Hargrave Adams, 54, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011.
Born in Anderson, S.C., he was a son of Elizabeth Stepp Adams and the late Grey Littleton Adams.
Shay was a descendant of one of the oldest pioneer families of the Black Mountain, N.C., area and he leaves behind many relatives in that historic area. He was an avid traveler and photographer, as well as an accomplished creative artist, specializing in linoleum cut art. He was also quite active in the Sumter Youth Theatre.
Since retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Shay worked in a variety of jobs and traveled extensively. He maintained pen pals in almost every country in the world.
Surviving are his mother, Elizabeth "Libby" Stepp Adams; 11 cousins; a host of dear friends around the world; and his loving dog, Saddle.
A memorial service for Shay will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral at a later date. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to PALSS – Palmetto AIDS Life Support Services, P.O. Box 12124, Columbia, SC 29211, or a charity of one's choice.

Dear Libby and Family,

Shay was a delight to have a friend, even if it was only through email correspondence and pen pal letters. He never forgot a birthday or a holiday and his love of photography and travel is what endeared him to many of us. But the most important part of him was his love of life. This only inspires us to pursue our own dreams and make the most of what life offers us. And he lived a very full life!

Dear Libby,
Although Shay had many friends near and far, each one of us was special to him. Shay had a gift for friendship and I consider it a blessing to have known him and to have been his friend.
Warmly,
Eric Smith
