William Lawrence "Bill" Pendergraph, 87, passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following several months of declining health.
Bill was born in Alamance County to Curtis Paul Pendergraph and Penie Moon Pendergraph. He graduated from Alexander Wilson School in 1943 and UNC-Chapel Hill in 1946 where he also completed graduate work in accounting and finance. Earning his CPA in 1951, Bill was employed by Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co. from 1950-1957. For the next 40 years, he performed public and private accounting and data processing in the Greensboro area. He served two years active duty in the US Navy during World War II. He was later appointed Assistant Paymaster in the US Naval Reserves from which he was honorably discharged in 1958 at the rank of LTJG.
His wife of 56 years, Mary Catherine Hodgin Pendergraph, preceded him in death in January 2012. Bill is survived by their two daughters, Ann Stoioff (Scott) of Burlington and Leigh Smith (David) of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren of whom he was very proud, Elizabeth Stoioff, Sarah Smith Binion (Thomas), William Smith, Brooks Stoioff, Benjamin Smith, and Alexander Smith; three sisters, Margaret Jordan of Farmville, Va., Ina Ewan of Coral Springs, Fla., Sallie Glisson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one brother, Scott Pendergraph of Greensboro; sister-in-law, Geraldine Pendergraph of Graham; seven nieces and two nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Eckles "Red" Pendergraph and one nephew.
Many will remember Bill for his flower and vegetable gardening. Recalling his good times spent in gardens, the family will welcome friends on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Bicentennial Garden, 1105 Hobbs Road, Greensboro. From the main entrance, follow the paved path a short distance to the left.
The family appreciates the care Bill received from the Assisted Living Staff at Heritage Woods in Winston-Salem. The family is grateful for everyone at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home who provided compassion, kindness and comfort during his last days.

Dear Ann, Leigh and families,
With my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your dear dad ~ my dear Uncle Bill who I hold fond memories as well of the whole family from all the visits. My precious memory shall be the last visit with him last November which I will always cherish. Mom often spoke lovingly of her supportive brother, Bill. May God be with you all as you go through these days forward and sustain you through the coming days by the wonderful memories of your wonderful dad. Love you all, Cousin PJ

Sympathy to the Pendergraph family. I remember as a young girl visiting them on occasion in Greensboro with my dad Sam (who was Bill's uncle) and also at the occasional Moon reunion.

Bill was a tremendous mentor to me as I was graduating from UNC-Greensboro and entering the accounting profession in the early 1980's. As I worked part time for him, he taught me more than accounting. He taught me about integrity. He was truly a great man and I am forever indebted to him.

To Ann and Leigh and their families-
I send my deepest condolences. I will always hold on to sentimental memories I have of my Uncle Bill and Aunt MC- their visits to DC where we lived and whenever we came down to NC. Uncle Bill was a very loving and loyal brother to my mom, paying for my mom's senior class ring (and some more things) when the family could not afford to buy! My mom does not forget that ever!
May he rest in peace!
Love, Cousin Donalda
