Kent Asher Obituary
75, of Toccoa, passed away
Monday, July 14, 2025, at
his home.
Born Oct. 11, 1949, in
Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.,
he was the son of the late
Keith Hickman and Chris-
tine Young Asher.
Mr. Asher was enjoying
retirement in Toccoa after
serving as the GIS Manag-
er for Rockdale County,
Georgia for 27 years. He
was also a United States
Army veteran, enlisting at
age 18 and serving as a
field medic in Vietnam
where he was awarded
several Purple Hearts.
Upon his return, he com-
pleted his college degree,
earning the rank of 2nd
Lieutenant in 1976. As a
commissioned officer,
Kent served in Korea; Fort
Bliss, Texas; Baumholder,
Germany; Worms, Ger-
many; and Fort Hood,
Texas, before leaving the
service at the rank of Cap-
tain in 1988. During his
military career, he was
awarded commendations
including (but not limited
to) the Meritorious Ser-
vice Medal and the Army
Commendation Medal
with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
He was active in his
childrens' lives as a leader
in scouts and as a volun-
teer and chaperone for the
chorus, band and theater
programs at Heritage High
School in Conyers, Ga. He
continued to chaperone
even after his kids gradu-
ated, becoming an unoffi-
cial dad to hundreds of
students in Cobb, Chero-
kee, Jefferson and Pauld-
ing counties. Kent was
easily recognizable on
these outings due to his
trademark orange puffy
jackets, which he wore to
be visible. Scores of stu-
dents learned to call him
Poppa A or just Dad.
Family members in-
clude his wife, Patricia
Asher, of Toccoa; daugh-
ters, Kathryn Bishop
(Jonathan), and Carolyn
Kimberly Asher; son, Kei-
th Robert Asher (Melissa);
and grandchildren, Ian
Bishop, Ivy Bishop, Kent
Asher, and Milagro Asher.
The family's wishes are
for him to be inurned at
the Georgia National
Cemetery in Canton, Geor-
gia, at a date to be deter-
mined.
