MOUNTAIN CITY - Gene D. Hackney, age 91 of Mountain City, TN, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Gene was born August 8, 1934 in Johnson County, TN to the late Thomas Hackney and Edith Milhorn Hackney. In addition to his parents Gene was preceded in death by five sisters, Joyce Walker, Doris Shell, Marie Dugger, Mamie Stanton, and Louise Buckles; five brothers, Brady Bumgardner, T.G. Hackney, Bill Hackney, Wilbert Hackney, and Byrom Hackney; and son-in-law, Keith Mullen.

Gene was known for his gardening and enjoyed going to Heritage Hall. Gene retired as bookkeeper from the Johnson County School System. He was a United States Army Veteran and was a member of American Legion Post. After retirement Gene and Alma enjoyed twenty bus trips together. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church serving as treasurer for more than 60 years; he loved his church and loved taking church groups to the Sight and Sound. Gene loved his family and will be missed by all who knew him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Alma Warren Hackney; daughter, Teresa Mullen; son; Steven Hackney (Rita); one grandson, Noah Mullen; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Will Kerley officiating. Special music will be provided by Christina Lewis, Donna Fritts, and Elaine Moore. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery with Bill Worley officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Frank Bass, Rick Moore, Wayne Lewis, Dylan Nichols, Melvin Humphrey, Bennie Townsend, and Danny Grindstaff. Honorary pallbearers are John Payne and Members of American Legion Post 61.
