Delisa Curtis Cox obituary

Delisa Cox Obituary

Delisa Curtis Cox

"The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. . . "

Deuteronomy 33:27

Delisa Curtis Cox passed from this life to the next on the evening of March 6, 2012 at her home on the Louisiana District Campground in Tioga, Louisiana. Delisa was the wife of District Superintendent Kevin V. Cox.

Delisa was the youngest daughter of Reverend Donald and Laveda Curtis, born in Sedalia, Missouri on September 15, 1961. At the age of 18, she married Kevin Cox, a young man she had been acquainted with since her baby-stroller days. For Delisa, life had always been - and would always be - an adventure. Joining hands and hearts with Kevin, the love of her life, they entered into the work of the ministry serving as Pastor in Wewahitchka, Florida (1980-1986) then on to Bogalusa, Louisiana, where Kevin had been brought up, to serve with his parents at First UPC Bogalusa from 1986-1998. The year 1998 brought them to Tioga, Louisiana, where they would remain. Their ministry grew in ever-widening circles.

Kevin Cox served as District Secretary from 1998-2005. Delisa had already been serving as Women's Ministries President for the state of Louisiana and the additional role of District Secretary's wife was not an additional burden, simply an additional way to meet people, to love people, to change people's lives just by being prayerfully present. In 2005, with the retirement of T. F. Tenney, Kevin Cox was elected Louisiana's 4th District Superintendent. Delisa flourished in this role that gave her myriad opportunities to pour light and love and laughter into the lives of women - and especially women in ministry - throughout the Bayou State, across the nation, and around the world.

She often signed cards and notes with the phrase, "Love, hugs, and smiles." She had a heart for the underprivileged and less fortunate people she encountered, and reached for them with inimitable love, care, strength - and love, hugs, and smiles. Whether in her role as pastor's wife, or women's ministry leader, or just being Delisa - her sign off said it all: Love, Hugs, Smiles. It was who she was.

Delisa is survived by her husband of 32 years, Kevin V. Cox; two sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Danielle, Stephen and Sylvia. Also cherishing her memory are her parents Reverend Donald and Laveda Curtis (Harrison, Arkansas), two sisters Debbie Barnhill (husband, Reverend Roy Barnhill) of Lumberton, North Carolina and Kathy Brown (husband, Reverend David Brown) of Kirksville, Missouri. Cherishing her memory will be her beloved father-in-law, Reverend Virgil W. Cox (wife, Martha), and sister-in-law, Dr. Rebecca Cox Patton (of Jackson, Mississippi). There are also nieces and nephews who will never forget their beloved Aunt Delisa. She is also survived by two special uncles and an aunt, Reverend Cecil and Nadine McCutcheon of Tioga, and Delmar "Shorty" Martin of Bellefonte, Arkansas.

Delisa was preceded in death by her beloved mother-in-law, friend and mentor, Ruby S. Cox as well as her grandparents.

Visitation will be Friday, beginning at 1:00 pm in the Sanctuary of The Pentecostals of Alexandria. The memorial service will begin that evening at 7:00 pm. Participating in the service will be: Reverend Anthony Mangun, Rev. Terry Shock, and Reverend T. F. Tenney. Under the direction of White Oaks Funeral Home, Alexandria.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Louisiana District UPC (PO Box 248, Tioga, LA 71477) for the Delisa Cox Memorial.

Delisa Cox will always be remembered by me as a wonderful loving friend. We had a special bond. I remember her lovely sweet smile that always lit up her eyes. She was my forever friend.

I did not know Sis Cox personally, just as a women's leader within the United Pentecostal Church. I saw her just 2 weeks prior to her passing in Walmart. Even though she did not know me, she looked at me and smiled. I will never forget that. Now that's how a leader should be.

I will never forget my wonderful friend DeLisa Cox. Our friendship was such that where we left off on your last visit we just picked it up when we met again. I know it will be the same when we see each other on that beautiful shore. She was always so cheerful even when she was not feeling so great. A beautiful person on the inside and outside. I will always love her and remember her with warm loving thoughts.

To the Cox Family -
It has been several years since I've seen you all. There's so much to say about Sis Delisa, but the thing that means the most is that she was a Christian through and through. She made everyone feel so special with every conversation. One of my favorite memories of her was when she invited me to the construction of your house so that I could write Bible Scriptures on its foundation. I hope you realize how many lives she touched. What an honor it has been to know her!

March 19, 2012

Although it has been several years since I saw Sis Cox, I recently spoke with Heather about her struggle. I will always remember her wonderful giving spirit and what an awesome servant of God! What works she did in the short time with us! Thanks for sharing her with all of us! Praying for the entire family and all the staff at the campgrounds. I know you are facing a challenge in missing her wonderful spirit on a daily basis.

Was so shocked to hear of Lisa's passing, still can't wrap my brain around it. While we haven't been close for many years, I still have very fond memories of our growing-up years in Sedalia, MO. Going door to door selling peanut brittle or inviting people to church, sleepovers, youth gatherings, etc. She definitely left an impact wherever she went and I have no doubt that all of heaven rejoices that she's there!

Stephen, I was very sorry to hear about the loss of your mother but she is in such a better place. I pray God keep his hand upon you and your family in this time of suffering and loss.

Brother Cox & family: I have the most precious memories of DeLisa. She will always hold a special place in my heart that no one on earth can ever fulfill. She is absolutely one of the most beautiful women that I ever met on this planet. Like everyone says that ever meets her, look at that smile. Lights up the world!!!! I love her and I love you brother Cox. I will never forget the wonderful memories of coming to your home in Wewa and our class parties that she would throw for us.... My heart aches for all of your family and especially for you Kevin, her mom, dad and sons and daughter n laws. I love you all and will pray continually as the days ahead will be very hard. No one could ever take her place.... Definitely one of a kind... I still cannot believe she is gone..... I just found out about her passing yesterday, 3/12. I am so very sorry. Beautiful Delisa -we didn't know her long since we only lived in Louisiana for 4 yrs, but the few times I had a chance to get close to her- I would tell her that she was so beautiful and looked like a movie star. Now she is no longer a movie star but transformed into one of heaven's star! Enter and enjoy your reward, good and faithful servant of God.

I was blessed to be a part of her life when she was just a small girl. I then watched as she grew into the teen years and her marriage to Bro. Cox from then it has just been a time to time meeting here and there. I am sure she is everything that was said about her. She had a mom and dad who helped make her the woman she was at death. I loved her and her family. I weep at their loss and smile at her gain. Prayers to all family members.

We pray that the comfort of the Holy Ghost will minister in the dark and lonely days ahead - sending peace and joy through the memories of Delisa's amazing life.

March 10, 2012

To the Curtis, Cox and McCutcheon family: My memories of Delisa go a long way back, to Waynesville, Mo., where Delisa and her family attended for a time. I remember her as a 5 or 6 yr. old, with brown curly hair and one blue eye and one brown eye. Surprisingly, there is still a "connection" after all these years (thru mutual friends who have given me updates during her illness). Bro. Kevin, I have experienced the loss of a spouse also, so I know what it's like. The Lord will see you through. You are in my prayers. Sis.Carrie (Evans) McCreery, Mcminnville, OR

I'm confident Lisa is happy in the presence of the Lord, but I know how hard it is on those left behind.I only found out about her passing yesterday and was able to see the service online thanks to the wonderful church in Alexandria. A great woman of God, and a friend to everyone. Life here will not be the same without her...that's for sure. The campgrounds will be missing that special light that she always brought with her when she entered the room. Never have we felt more safe and secure as we have since we have been under the leadership of the Cox family. Words cannot express the way we feel about Bro. and Sis. Cox! Our hearts are grieved at our loss here, but we find peace in the fact that heaven awaits where we will all be together again. Our prayers for all the family, especially Bro. Cox and the boys. Sis. Cox was the epitomy of Proverbs 31. She fulfilled her role completely and with balance. The scripture is true.Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman that fears the Lord she shall be praised. The legacy she has left behind is for our direction. I am sure she is one of the witnesses cheering us on that we can make it. We love you, Sis. Cox, until we meet again. Our prayers will be with you, Bro. Cox and family at this time of sorrow.

It is difficult for us to find words to expess our love and appreciation for all the Cox Family. Delisa was the perfect example of a Christian lady. She was love, hugs, and smiles. She impressed us with her humility as she walked among us. She treated everyone with the ' no respect of persons' attitude. . We will miss her so very much. We will continue to pray, love, and appreciate her adorable family. Bro. Cos it was so obvious how much you loved and cared for that precious lady. Thank you.
