Grady Welch Obituary

Grady Ellis Welch

Grady Ellis Welch, Sr., age 88, died on March 26, 2013. The Celebration of Life for him will be Monday, April, 1, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Pineville. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 3:00 in the chapel.

Grady Welch was born in Hickory, MS., on February 4, 1925. He spent his teenage years in Bossier City, LA. After high school, he served in the army during World War ll, deployed for over two years in the Pacific with the 533rd engineers. He was involved in many beach landings and received the Bronze Star during the liberation of the Philippines, ending the war as an acting first sergeant. Upon returning home, he met Myrtle Jordan on New Year's Eve, 1945, and they married on August 2, 1946.

After graduating from college and seminary, he served as a minister of education in Alabama and then as business manager of Louisiana College. In 1961, he joined the Louisiana Baptist Convention staff as Brotherhood Director and later as Stewardship Director until his retirement in 1991. He served as a pastor and interim pastor for several Louisiana churches over the years. He and his wife made many international mission trips, working to bring hope to people the world over and helping train church leaders.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister and by his grandson, Christopher Welch.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle Welch; his children Grady Welch, Jr. and Ellen Dunn; his grandchildren Mimi Dickinson, Marianne Neuhoff, Stuart Lamkin, Emily Drake, and Trey Welch; and his great-grandchildren Emma Robinson, Laurel Dickinson, Jordan Neuhoff, Sean and Silas Lamkin, and Austin Welch.

It was an honor to have known Mr. Welch. I will always remember his speech to our students at Buckeye High School on Veterans day. I also had the privilege of coaching his son Grady Jr at Pineville High School. My sincere condolences.

All we in the Louisiana Baptist Convention owe a great deal to Grady Welch and the fine work he did! He was a wonderful and faithful servant. I can't help but imagine what heaven might be like for him with all the people he helped to win through gifts of administration and preaching. God bless your family with gracious comfort.
