Elmer - GySgt. Larry E. Monk USMC (Ret.)
Funeral service for Gunnery Sergeant Larry E. Monk USMC (Retired) will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, May 28, 2018 in the Fellowship United Methodist Church, 7426 Highway 112, Elmer with Brother Joey Rudisill and Brother Randy Ellis officiating. Committal service will follow in the Fellowship Methodist Cemetery under the direction of White Oaks Funeral Home, Oakdale.
Larry, 77, of Elmer, entered eternal rest on Friday, May 25, 2018 in his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born 1941 in Sieper to the union of Isaac Meredith Monk and Ada Jane Lafayette Monk. He was a member of St. Clair Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World. GySgt. Monk served 20 years in the United States Marine Corps. He was involved in the Vietnam War, was stationed over the years in California, North Carolina, Georgia, Hawaii, and Washington D.C. Overseas assignments included Borneo, Japan, Guam, Korea, Vietnam, Australia, and the Philippine Islands. He was with the Pacific Nuclear Weapons Training Group from January 1976 through February 1978. He enjoyed reading, fishing, photography, and especially family gatherings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Ada Monk; one sister, Doris Brown; two brothers, William "Bill" Monk (Jeannette) and Millard Monk (Lonie).
Those left behind to cherish his memory are: his loving wife of 37 years, Betty Monk of Elmer; three daughters, Tracie Givens (Chris) of Pollock, Cheryl Menou (Mike) of Natchitoches, and Sharon Scott (Jeff) of Grapevine, Texas; one son, Greg Monk of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and caring neighbors.
Pallbearers to serve will be Johnny Brown, Jerry Ainsworth, Wayne McFarland, Randy Monk, Rickey Monk, and Davin Ainsworth. Alternate pallbearers to serve will be Dexter McFarland and Dwight McFarland.
Visitation will be held at Fellowship United Methodist Church in Elmer on Monday, May 28, 2018 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. in the church.
