Raymond Laborde Obituary

Raymond Julian Laborde

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life had breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Raymond Julian Laborde left this temporary home on Sunday, January 17, 2016 to meet his Lord and Savior and his first born son, Ronald Martin Laborde, who died in 1965. Raymond was born on August 18, 1927 to Dr. Emeric and Minnie Laborde.

He is cherished by his wife of 64 years, Nellie Sanchez Laborde and his five children, Minnie Laborde Lafargue (David), Donald Andrew Laborde (Becky), Charles Anthony Laborde (Lynn), Ray Julian Laborde (Denise), Rachel Laborde Voinche (Chris), 13 grandchildren: Clay Lafargue, Ashley Dubea, Carl Lafargue, Lily Brouillette, Annie Bass, Chelsey Blankenship, Robert Karam, Matthew Karam, Camille Karam, Douglas Laborde, Dale Laborde, Danielle Laborde, Julian Laborde, and 11 great grandchildren.

During his lifetime, he strived to be his best and treat all men with honesty and integrity as he served his community as Mayor of Marksville for 12 years, State Representative for 20 years and Commissioner of Administration of the State of Louisiana for 4 years. He served in the Louisiana National Guard and retired after 25 years as Captain. He enjoyed being an active member of the St. Joseph Church Council, past Jaycee President, past member and President of the Chamber of Commerce and past President of the Louisiana Municipal Association.

He loved life, he loved people, and he loved helping to make their lives better. Whenever someone walked into his clothing store, Raymond's Department Store, which he owned and operated for 63 years, they were welcomed with a warm smile and firm handshake. One could often see him standing in his doorway of the business, waving to passersby as a symbol in small town America.

Raymond always found something positive in challenging situations. He would carefully study each problem, and find the best possible solution. When you left his presence, you knew that he had given you the best advice.

He knew the value of family. He worried about each one of his children. He so enjoyed their visits, and spoke so highly of each child.

Politics burned in his blood. He stepped up to each challenge, each opponent, and never doubted his ability to win. He loved the race, he loved meeting people and they loved him too.

He was considered the "best of the best" as a seasoned orator. When you needed someone to speak on your behalf, you contacted Mr. Raymond. He researched, he studied, he prepared a beautiful tribute.

A great man's life of 88 years can never be completely captured in so many words. Raymond Laborde lived life to the fullest.

Special thanks to Dr. Saccaro, Dr. Nijar, Dr. Kevin Bordelon, Dr. Ed Kalifey, Dr. L. J. Mayeux, Dr. Shaw, Dr. Hathorne, and caretakers of Intrepid, All Saints Hospice, Nicole Madrigal, Jessica Ducote, Christine Daigrepont, Cassie Clark, Francis McIntosh, Sandra Speer, and most of all to Dot McDaniel for keeping Raymond's open.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville in honor of Mr. Raymond Laborde.

Funeral services for Mr. Raymond Laborde will be at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Marksville with a wake service beginning on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 7:15 p.m. in the Chapel. A Christian Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marksville on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery #1.

Pallbearers honored to serve will be his grandsons, Dale Laborde, Doug Laborde, Clay Lafargue, Carl Lafargue, Robert Karam, Matthew Karam, and Julian Laborde.

Wonderful tribute to a wonderful man . Although I knew him mostly by general reputation, I was pleased to read the glowing tribute in the obituary.

So far as I remember , I shook his hand only once . As a bayou-kid who wore Roebucks bought by mail-order , I bought my first pair of Levis [ more cool!] from Mr. Raymond about 1961. He greeted me with the same warm smile shown here and 55 years later I still remember it . Yes ,his was a life well lived . I am thankful for the fond memory .May he rest in peace.
