Catherine Hendel Wright
1952 – April 19, 2025
Catherine Hendel Wright, born in Lynwood, CA in 1952 to parents Mildred and John Hendel, passed away on Saturday, April 19th after her long journey with Parkinson's disease. She lived and died with grace. In her final days and moments, her husband and daughters were by her side. Though her departure came too soon, her family finds solace knowing that her gentle spirit is now free from suffering, released to journey boundlessly as she always deserved.
Cathy was Love. Her aloha spirit touched everyone she met, leaving them warmer and happier for having known her. Her grace made time stand still. Beneath her loving warmth resided a brilliant mind. Valedictorian at her high school, and a degree in botany at UC Davis, Cathy's intelligence illuminated everything she touched from her legendary Canasta victories, to her thoughtful approach to life's complexities. She generously shared knowledge as a substitute teacher, inspiring countless young minds with her patient guidance. Special annual adventures were the Escape camping trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountains with student groups, planned gatherings at D.L. Bliss State Park, and many trips to Reno with dear friends to spa, giggle and gamble a bit. She loved kitties of all sizes, water features of all types, and dressing beautifully was her art.
She masterfully managed the family architecture firm alongside her husband David, balancing professional acumen with her true calling as the most devoted mother to her daughters Megan and Heather. In her role as grandmother to Wyatt and Ryder, she created a legacy of love, wisdom, and boundless joy. They will remember her with bunny ears on bringing easter joy and providing a safe cozy home for hugs. Family was Cathy's world. She created magic in everyday moments - countless hugs, bedtime stories, holiday traditions, and wisdom shared over the kitchen table. As the youngest of three siblings alongside Larry and Marcy, Cathy understood the value of family bonds from an early age. As wife, mom, sister, and grandma, she wove unbreakable bonds of love that will hold us together now that she's gone.
She loved the ocean, making her home at the Sea Ranch, where she met the love of her life, David and their beautiful story began. Ultimately, they found home in Nevada City where they built an incredible life together. Cathy and David designed and built a home on the street she named "Dream Sky Way," a truly wonderful place surrounded by wildlife and nature where they raised their daughters. She traveled extensively throughout Europe, North America, and across the United States, often visiting the Island of Kauai with David, their second home since 1981, where she wore plumeria, sang with Hawaiian musicians, and danced the hula. She traveled extensively but her heart was always happiest when returning to their Nevada City home.
Cathy showed us what love looks like in action, taught us to see beauty everywhere, to open our hearts wide, and to face life's storms with grace and courage. The gift of her presence in our lives is beyond measure. Cathy's spirit dances on in each of us. Every act of kindness, moment of courage, thoughtful planning and burst of laughter carries her legacy forward. We will live the way she taught us - with open hearts, genuine spirits, and love that knows no bounds.
Aloha dearest Cathy and mom!
