Bruce Goodsell Obituary

Bruce Norton Goodsell, 61, died at Roger Williams Hospital on June 13, 2008, while recovering from surgery for colon cancer.
Bruce was born on Dec. 23, 1946, in Newton, Mass.
Bruce was an attorney in Westerly and was heavily involved with the Westerly Land Trust, The Shelter Harbor Fire District, The Westerly Charter Revision Commission, The Rhode Island Shoreline Coalition and the development of the Narragansett Indian Tribe Amicus Brief to the United States Supreme Court, a milestone in Rhode Island history.
Bruce was an avid woodworker and artist in many mediums with projects ranging from a Colonial Rhode Island corner chair to tables inspired by the designs of George Nakashima. Bruce often used antique hand tools for creating his furniture. Bruce was a founding member of the Westerly Artist Cooperative, where he displayed his art for many years. Bruce's woodworking talents included building a two-story post and beam building using hand tools for the main skeletal structure and building a bell tower for his church.
Bruce dedicated over 28 years to the planting and distribution of Gingko trees; the Gingko leaf was his signature on his woodworking pieces. He was also a member of The Bamboo Society and The American Chestnut Society.
Bruce was a great reader, book collector and a shareholder at The Boston Athenaeum and a member of the John Russell Bartlett Society. He was founder and president of Tools & Books, Ltd.
Bruce graduated from Carmel High School in California and attended the Coast Guard Academy for two years and graduated from URI in 1970 in political science and physics. Bruce joined the U.S. Army earning a Trainee Leadership Award while at Fort Dix. He was the top graduate of 176 in the Infantry Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. Bruce became 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Army with the National Security Agency and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal in 1975. He received an M.S. in Telecommunication Systems from George Washington University in 1975. Bruce was a graduate of Suffolk Law School in 1978 and became Attorney and Counselor of the Supreme Court in 1994. He became a member of the Vermont Bar Association in 1998.
Bruce is survived by his daughter, Marion Eaton Goodsell, and by Allison (Barrington) Goodsell. He is predeceased by his son, Benjamin Norman Goodsell. He leaves his parents Norton and Phyllis Goodsell of Wakefield and Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two sisters, Pamela Sheerin of Rye, N.H., and Port St. Lucie, and Marsha Bouchard of Westminster, Md. He also leaves his nieces, Kimberly Medeiros, Melanie Sheerin and Rebecca Sheerin; two grandnephews and a grandniece. Bruce is survived by many lifelong friends and colleagues in the arts and the law and also leaves Alan Barrington, Ruth Barrington, Nathan Barrington, Gail Barrington and eight other nieces and nephews.
Bruce was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church and, in the past few years, converted and became a member of The Orthodox Church of the Holy New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
Please come and share Bruce's life and view his art work at a memorial service at Christ Church, Westerly on Thursday, June 19, at 1 p.m. with a reception following. Dear Pam and Jim, Sorrow has entered your hearts this past week. And no words can lessen the pain. So I can only share my thoughts of Bruce with you.

A Genius Lived within Him
Allowing him to live his life, as he wanted.
In awe of the books of Law,
his love of wood, his mind of art, and his passion of culture.
Time was not fair to him, But he now lives within the hearts of all who knew him. Lives where enriched by his presence.
Deeply sorry, Donna and John Gillis

Dear Norman and Phlyss, How do words from me bring you comfort. I don't think there are any. I can only share my thoughts and hope that they bring you some peace. Bruce was a Genius in mind and spirit. And you two are the reason for his being. How wonderful a feeling to know that you have made a difference in the world, history has been made in Bruce's name. His work with the Reservations is his signature. And he was your son.
God Bless you during these days of
sadness. And though my presence cannot be there. Know that my thoughts during these days are with you and your family.
Deeply sorry, Donna and John Gillis

Dear Marion, Loosing my dad at a young age, I feel the pain of your loss. I found a sign that makes me think of my dad, at moments in my life, that I am not thinking of him. And when I see my sign I smile and know that the worry's of my life are shared with him and he will help me find my way. There isn't a day that goes by when I do not think of my dad. Time doesn't ease the pain, for in a moment I could cry. But what time does do is bring you through the rawness of pain and into the memories of laughter. You are the miracle of his life. His reason for being. Deeply sorry, Donna Gillis (Jim Sheerin's sister)

I had the honor of knowing Bruce for several years. He was a very good man. He helped our Wiquapaug Eastern Pequot Indian Tribe immensly. Here is an Indian prayer that I thought fits Bruce well. He was this kind of man. OH GREAT SPIRIT, WHOSE VOICE WE HEAR IN THE WINDS AND WHOSE BREATH GIVES LIFE TO ALL THE WORLD, HEAR US. WE ARE SMALL AND WEAK. WE COME TO YOU TO FIND STRENGTH AND WISDOM. LET US WALK IN BEAUTY AND MAKE OUR EYES EVER BEHOLD THE SUNSET. MAKE OUR HANDS RESPECT THE THINGS YOU HAVE MADE, AND OUR EARS SHARP TO HEAR YOUR VOICE. MAKE US WISE SO THAT WE MAY UNDERSTAND THE THINGS YOU HAVE TAUGHT OUR RELATIVES AND ANCESTORS. LET US LEARN THE LESSONS YOU HAVE HIDDEN IN EVERY LEAF AND ROCK. WE SEEK STRENGTH, NOT TO BE GREATER THAN OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS, BUT TO FIGHT OUR GREATEST ENEMY---OURSELVES!---MAKE US ALWAYS READY TO COME TO YOU WITH CLEAN HANDS AND STRAIGHT EYES, SO THAT WHEN LIFE FADES, AS THE FADING SUNSET, OUR SPIRIT MAY COME TO YOU WITHOUT SHAME. Second Councilman Keith R. Brown. EWO_WOX_CO_DAH_WA). Bless you Bruce.

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness I feel about Bruce's death. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss, my thoughts are with during this difficult time. He was very brave in his last weeks, I heard it in his voice.

I found this quote that may help you understand.

"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal "

All my love,
Barbara (Jim's Sister)

Marion
Our hearts are heavy over the loss of your dad. In the Indian world he is on his journey to the other side. We had the honor to meet with him over the past nine years as he was our Attorney. His knowledge in the Indian ways helped us two fold. After many talks together we both understood his Law and our Lore. We will be at a great lost with his passing. I am, sure you already know you were his heart and sole, he spoke of you often. We know that he will be watching from above and continue to guide us. He was giving the Indian name "Ewo Towosh Ke'en"
which means "He Speak For Us".

The Town of Charlestown has lost a true friend. Bruce loved this town and served us well for many years.
He was a real Renaissance Man and a delight to know. He enriched my life with his political savvy, but especailly with his humor. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of our dear, honorable friend. Bruce was such a lovely, intelligent and compassionate soul. He was a loving, generous and beautiful man. He was an incredible support to us when we were trying so hard and for so long to conceive our child, who sadly Bruce never got to meet.
We will always remember his smile, his gracious heart and his zest for life.
Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Bruce's daughter and parents.
We are honored and blessed to have known him and will miss him terribly.
