Edward "Ted" Callender

Edward "Ted" Callender, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 7, after a short illness. Ted loved sailing, woodworking and science. He was a geologist and oceanographer with a distinguished career at the University of Michigan and the U.S. Geological Survey. During his career, he conducted research on the Great Lakes, the oceans, Lake Baikal in Siberia and many lakes and reservoirs across the U.S. He made many significant contributions to understanding water quality and geologic processes. After retiring in Westerly, Ted continued his love of science through volunteer work on water quality in Quonochontaug Pond and Rhode Island's other salt ponds. He served on the Board of Salt Ponds Coalition and prepared many scientific articles using data collected by volunteer pond watchers.
He was born in Greenwich, CT, in 1938, son of the late Everett Callender and Jane Callender, Ted is survived by his wife, Gail Mallard, of Westerly, R.I.
He is also survived by his 2 sons, Edward E. "Toby" Callender of San Francisco, CA and David B. Callender and his wife, Naomi Sullivan-Callender of Prague, Czech Republic; 3 nieces: Gizella "Anne" Crawford & Natalie Bagley, of Milton, MA, and Christine Callender of Lancaster, PA, grandnieces and grandnephews: Will and Lucy Crawford, Nicholas and Madeline Bagley of Milton, MA, and his former wife, Penelope Callender of Pahrump, NV. He was preceded in death by his parents: Everett Callender and Jane Callender, and his brother Robinson "Bob" Callender of Williamsburg, VA.
He will be greatly missed by his 2 sons, 3 nieces, grandnieces, grandnephews, and many friends.
