Frederick Stein Obituary

Frederick H. "Fritz" Stein, 74, of Noank, Conn., died on Thursday morning, July 12, 2007, at his home, after a brief illness.
He was born on July 25, 1932, in New York City, N.Y., the son of Harve K. and Hope L. (Jonas) Stein. He moved to this area with his family and attended Fitch Senior High School, but finished his high school education by graduating from Moses Brown School in Providence. He went on to graduate with a bachelor's degree from URI with the class of 1955.
He served in the Coast Guard Reserve during the time of the Korean War aboard a fireboat out of New York City.
He married the former Candice Scholz at the Inn at Mystic on Feb. 14, 1986.
During his working career, Fritz was the owner and operator of Stone Ledge Art Gallery which was started by his father. He also became a Certified Art Appraiser. He served as director of operations at SCADD in New London for over 10 years.
Proud of his volunteer endeavors through the years, he was always very community minded in his affiliations. He served as a member of the Groton Town RTM, was a member of the Groton Rotary Club, longtime member and past president of the Mystic Art Association, past president of the Groton Regional Theatre, and a member of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team. He was a member of the Mystic Fire Department, and also owned an extensive collection of antique fire memorabilia. He was a 27-year active, recovered member of AA, volunteering to sponsor countless others in the program, and he was an active participant and served as chairman for the Enders Island Men's Retreats through the years. He loved gardening at his home but most enjoyed time spent with his family whenever possible.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Candice; his children and their families, Andrea Stein Carlow and her husband Dr. Steven B. Carlow of Mystic, Kimberly Stein Di Nicola and husband, Attorney Jeffrey D. Di Nicola of Walpole, Mass.; stepchildren, Kelly Chapman and husband, Edward Chapman of Bethel, Conn., and Kristen Westerhoff of New York City; and grandchildren, Rebecca Barstow Wagner and husband Bruce Wagner, Christopher Barstow and Jonathan Barstow, Allyson Carlow, Gregory Carlow, and Kevin Carlow, David Di Nicola and Daniel Di Nicola, Jennifer Chapman, Stephen Chapman and Daniel Chapman; and one great-grandchild, Nathan Wagner.
The funeral will assemble on Monday, July 16, at Mystic Funeral Home, Route 1, Mystic, at 10 a.m., proceeding directly to burial in Elm Grove Cemetery for 11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at the Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Noank, on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at Mystic Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to SCADD, 37 Camp Mooween Road, Lebanon, CT 06249.

Dear Mrs. Stein and family:
I have been told this morning of the loss of your husband Fritz
It is with profound sorrow, fresh from the shock of his sudden death, that I may try to express my feelings about the man who was a fatherly friend to all at SCADD and to the many others that he had helped throughout his distinguished career.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in my profound gratitude in all the help and hope he had provided to so many.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your family’s bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the love and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have been a part or his magnificent journey through life.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
